Wexford Cod Fri. 4th Nov.11

#1 Post by Security man »

People: Myself & one of the outlaws

Duration: 4 Hours (10.30pm - 3.00amish)

Tide: 2hrs either side of HW

Weather: Dry, calm starry night, moon set @ 1.30am

Bait: Fresh peeler Crab

Rigs: 4/0 and 5/0 Pulley Pennels

Results: 9 Cod (to 5lb) & 13 dogs

Report:
Not one for generally posting reports, but I was specifically asked to.. so here goes ;)
Bought a new 16ft Beachcaster on friday so was eager to break it in...
Surf had died down a bit and the seas (although a heavy swell), looked fishable for the first time in weeks. I recalled this time last year, where we had bumper sessions with up to 16 cod in 2hrs - unfortunately however, the whole south coast has nearly been out-of-bounds since August between the wind & weed!
In addition to the new rod, I spotted 5/0 Aberdeen hooks in Woodies DIY (Yes, woodies! - do a whole range of rods and reels now too :? ) - I got a pack for the craic, a step up from my usual 4/0.

New rod, 5/0 pennel, 1st massive cast.... 2 mins in, Rod buckled over - tripod and all, started heading for France
Thought SURE it was a Bass! - gave a good scrap, and took a bit of negotiating it through the heavy surf and undertow. Eventually fish landed, a new PB for me  - 5lb Cod. Nice way to christen a new rod!!

The Bro-in-law was next on with a Dog, followed by me with a dog, then him with another plump Cod about 3lb.
It continued like that all night - Cod, Dog, Cod, Dog, Cod, Dog etc. etc.
Some of the cod bites were identical to dog bites too, so it was a lottery each time whether to bother reeling it in straight away or not!! I had another big fish on near the end, about 5 or 6lb I suspect - scrapping like mad, which I am fairly confident was a Bass - but lost him in the surf's undertow trying to drag him up the hill.
Finished up at about 3am, ONLY cos we ran out of crab!! :(

Total tally for the night was 9 Cod & 13 Boww-wows.
Went back down again to the same mark the following night (Sat), same tide but NOT A SNIFF - 4 dogs in 4 hours.
Looks like the cod have moved on from that mark for the minute... but at least the signs are there for another great season! :D
