thats fine pat but if you take into account the amount of time ,trips, and anglers that caught very little its nice to see decent cod caught there is a lot of anglers dont get them anyone going down to cork thinking there going to fill the cooler boxes with 10 lb plus cod will be in for a wake up call . i have caught 10lb cod in cork this year but not many most species of fish in cork is under pressurePat wrote:Alright then...here's another swallow. Re: Jumbo Cod
Cod fishing is great all over the harbour... I've not caught any big ones like that but plenty in the 3-5lb catagory around roches point...
I'd love to go further for some biggies but I'm not sure my boat could make it out to a good spot...
I'm open to PM's if I'm wrong?

we tried all the 'hot spots' we had been told about - near the mouth, along the shore and offshore - and we fished hard all day.
a lot of people were promising decent cod and, if i can recall correctly, i think that we actually only caught ONE cod at about a pound. we were sorely dissappointed.

defo not that easy to get them as far as i can see

sorry Pat!

However, for those with the local knowledge reasonably good success is a regular occurrence. The angler in the last pic does catch cod to 12lb, and sometimes 14lb, on a regular enough basis. He fishes one particular spot that he knows can produce, hits it at the right time and uses the right tactics.
During the winter months a decent bag of codling (from 1lb - 4lbs) is a resonable prospect. We've proven that many times in our light line comps. In fact some of the comps anglers would need to have had 70 to 80 codling to figure in the prizes.

You never asked me

The amount of quality cod that was around cork harbour this year was unbelievable.
Fish up to 3lb weight were often taken off the hook before they got into the boat and put back because they were taking up space.
Catching 30 cod over 3lb in a day out was the norm.
To be honest it became very boring

Myself and a mate are hoping to go to try Cork Harbour on Friday 28th.
Driving down from Dublin with boat on trailer, whats the best slip to use etc.
Any info would be appreciated, by pm if possible so as not to hijack the thread.

Re: Jumbo Cod
We were out on sat and we went out a little bit looking for macks and on one drift we caught 6 cod and 2 macks all over 4lbs. One string of feathers had a 6lb and 4lb on it. For the laf the buddy pulled out an 18in norwegian pirk and baited it up with 2 mack fillets and on the next drift he caught a beut of a 9lb'er....
Amazing fishing...

Re: Jumbo Cod
A very valid point Willie. Local knowledge is the key, and more importantly good local knowledge. If targeting cod in Cork Harbour its advisable to book through one of the charter skippers affiliated to the Cork Harbour Angling Hub. All these skippers have a very good record targeting the cod and have put their clients onto good cod catches over the last 12 months. The following reports on the Hub blog give a good idea:steyrman wrote:thats fine pat but if you take into account the amount of time ,trips, and anglers that caught very little its nice to see decent cod caught there is a lot of anglers dont get them anyone going down to cork thinking there going to fill the cooler boxes with 10 lb plus cod will be in for a wake up call . i have caught 10lb cod in cork this year but not many most species of fish in cork is under pressurePat wrote:Alright then...here's another swallow. Charlie, I think you were unlucky. Good local knowledge is the key. The marks you were given may produce in general but when the fishing is slack you need someone with you to put you on a spot that will produce under tough conditions. I know you had a guide one day; no disrespect to the guy, but I don't think he has the knowledge I'm talking about.chuckaroo wrote:couldnt agree more there steyrman. i spent a full day in and around cork harbour targeting these fish.steyrman wrote:thats fine pat but if you take into account the amount of time ,trips, and anglers that caught very little its nice to see decent cod caught there is a lot of anglers dont get them anyone going down to cork thinking there going to fill the cooler boxes with 10 lb plus cod will be in for a wake up callPat wrote:Alright then...here's another swallow.
