Brandon - Kerry

#1 Post by Eoghan »

People: Myself, Bro in law and 2 mates

Duration: Thur to Sun Morn

Tide: Various

Weather: Mixed but mainly good

Bait: Sandeels

Rigs: one hook 4/0

Results: Various - see below

Report:

Tough couple of days fishing on the Dingle peninsula.
Huge tides, decent weather. Long hours put in.

4 of us fished from Thur to Sat, mainly the Brandon area and some nearby marks.
We fished our usual marks with soft plastics and lures – all we could manage was pollock and macks on our lure marks.
On average we fished 3 sessions a day, morn, avo over low water and evening.

Our main intention was to avoid our best mark down there – the one we use with bait as we really wanted to
Concentrate on lures this time. However after a few Bass blanks we gave in and went over to it. It didn’t let us down.
It wasn’t fishing well either but we managed 8 bass in total and a decent sting ray. Usually this time of year we would expect
Between 5-7 bass each at this mark. Tides were perfect for this mark. High tide around 9pm and a warm evening.
The bass this time round were small, largest was 3Ib but mainly 1-2Ib fish.

We did also go to this mark at low water during the day to see if we could plug it.
The place was crawling with stingray. You had to look where you were putting your feet at times.
Bit unnerving..!! Not big fish, but im sure they still hurt..! J

One thing we did notice was the unreal amount of sandeels and large herring fry in the water.
Not sure if the bass are feeding on these and as a result not having to feed as often.
But we tried everything from sluggo’s to surface lures, you name it. More lures than a small tackle shop.!

We did take a boat out of Brandon Pier for the hell of it.
Had some nice pollock, whiting, ballans, cookoo’s, sand dabs, mack and launce.
Defo worth a look if you are down that way. Only €20 an hour and no shortage of fish.

All in all a great couple of days, bit disappointing with the numbers of bass and the size of them.
Tides were massive, and I think in previous trips this has not fished well in massive tides.
Need to look back at older data and see.

Tnks guys, overall the fishing was good, its just we were targeting Bass as usual so not so good from this point of view.
Really wanted to avoid the bait mark and that we would have enough fish on lures but not to be.

The stinger when hooked headed out to sea......hilarious to see the face on my mate.

The guinness was great though...! :-) Thats the main thing...!

Ha ha, I did actually. My mate who caught it wouldnt go near it. One of the other lads put a towel over the tail.
It was caught on a pennel - bit tough to release. Ended up cutting line and taking the hooks out backwards. Nice fish, felt sorry for it for some reason.

It fell to our last piece of sandeel that had just caught a bass and was mangled..! And it took it up off the bottom. Guess it was hungry..!

Some fight though, took off and stripped lots of line etc.

You forget to mention the stinger was caught on a light bass rod, one hell of a scrap.
