soft plastic pollack

#1 Post by chuckaroo »

People: me

Duration: 2 hours

Tide: up

Weather: fine

Bait: lures

Report:
went to a local mark to try for seatrout and to try out a few soft plastics that i had recently purchased..
tried with a small silver spinner along the shore to get a trout but didnt manage to get one. tried for an hour and could feel the spinner getting hit often but managed only a few small pollack. at one stage i think i lost a pretty decent trout though - i got a fish to the surface and it spat the treble at the last minute. all i could see was a bar of silver splashing on the surface before it disappeared. think it was a trout anyway
decided to put on a small lead head and a long thin plastic that resembled a sandeel. first 3 casts produced 3 fine pollack with the biggest being around 4.5lb. good stuff.
i reckon i had better success with the soft plastic lure because it was lighter and could be moved through the water that bit slower, giving the fish a better chance to grab it. was also surprised that the pollack caught on the soft plastic were much bigger than the others i was getting on the spinner. i'll be using them more often! :D

nice fish 8)

what soft plastics are you using mate? and where can i get them
im fairly new to fishing and have tried lots of different things but can only seem to catch pollock with rag/sandeel on a float ( caught a couple with a home made spinner ) .

i have tried the black jelly worms with red tail but never caught a thing with them but then again i am probably fishing them wrong ( i use a 2oz weight about 4ft of the jellyworm )

cheers

There isn't much scope for fishing off the rocks around here but those "Firetails" you mention are by far the best lure from the boat . Increase the length of leader ( from weight to worm ) as much as you can . 12 ft would be ideal but obviously difficult to cast . Try for a minimum of 6 ft . Retrieve as slowly as you dare , then slow down a bit more !
Pollack often show interest with very gentle plucks , easily mistaken for temporarily snagging a small bit of weed . Do not strike or make any change to your speed of retrieve . They will often wait until the very last minute before actually taking the bait then they go into a powerful first dive and hook themselves . Game on !
If you add a strip of mackerel to the hook they will often take more quickly and aggressively . The only problem is that they also tend to be deeply hooked so you can end up having to kill small fish which you would otherwise return alive .
Others may tell you different but that is my 2 cents worth . Good luck .

mate, blowin has hit the nail on the head there about how to cast and retrieve a soft plastic when fishing for pollack. totally agree with what he's saying about the retrieval speed and technique. brilliant wee post there and well worth noting!
you can buy soft plastics anywhere and everywhere i.e. tackle shops and online. i got a few off ebay recently.
i tend to go for ones with the idea that the more they look like a sandeel the better, but there are endless varieties and colours that will all catch fish! on a different day and in a different place where there are feeding pollack i know that your red tails will work too, for sure, regardless of distance between weight and hook IMHO. you just need to find the fish!
below is a photo of one i used recently to get my first bass. its a lovely looking lure about 6inches long, is weighted, and the action of it is just great, very lifelike.
the one that i was using to catch the pollack tho was just a lead-head and a long thin plastic put onto it. very straight forward but deadly looking, i was fishing it exactly as how blowin describes there. havent got a photo of it tho.
the good thing about a lead-head, or either a weighted plastic as well, is that you dont need that weight placed up your line...
good luck

Really good point for rock fishing . I was pre-occupied with boat where you generally need a lot more ( separate ) weight to get down to the bottom .
One thing I didn't mention is that occasionally when nothing has been happening and you retrieve really fast to get the lure out of the water for some reason the bloomin things will hit it with a real bang !
So maybe I should give you my 2 cents back !  Good luck

again to mention the firetail jelly worm, they are absolutly SAVAGE for pollock i find that the black, and brown ones are the best, kinda replicate a lug, serious action in the water on em, i would fish them with weedless hooks but after gettin a few tugs and good bites/catches they break, at least they are cheap tho 50cent r watever you can buy big bags of 50 r 100 on ebay cheap
