Bait: Peeler / rag / lug / razor / mack / jellies / spinners / feathers.

Rigs: Bottom / float / spinning

Results: As usual, more fish than I could possibly remember ! Seven species caught : pollock to 4 lb/ mack / wrasse to 4 lb / flounder/ bass to 6 lb / dogfish and huss to 9 lb. Strangely, no corkwing .




Report: This was the second trip that we'd made to Ireland in September and most probably the last ! Last year, we had some pretty foul weather but not the continual gales that really screwed things-up, fishing wise, this time!The strong winds put most of our preferred rock-marks out-of-bounds and we had to calculate on a daily basis where we could wet a line. The huge advantage of having three peninsulas to choose from( Mizen, Sheepshead and Beara ) meant that somewhere relatively safe could always be found. Whilst it was blowing a hoolie at Barley Cove, the sea was almost flat-calm at Spannish Point ( on the south coast, towards Goleen).

To summarise what we got and where : huss to 9 lbs at Bantry Airstrip , together with dogs. Bass to 6 lb and flounders at Barley Cove. Pollock, wrasse and mack all over the place, with dogs and huss on the bottom. We tried a couple of new marks on the north side of the Beara between Allihies and Eyeries, one of which was REALLY deep and made me think ling and codling could be possible, but they didn't show. I reckon we were fishing in more than 20 metres of water. We fished there on the best day we had and were rewarded by sighting an orca only a few hundred metres away ! The midges were mean little b*****ds ! A rock-mark on Sheepshead ( near Gortnakilla pier) gave great sport with pollock. I had a real beauty on a big jelly-fish ( recommended by Dan at Halfway Angling) but just couldn't get to it because of the tidal-surge. I reckon it weighed between 8-10 lbs. No problem though, as the fish would have been returned ! A couple of marks towards Roscarberry were very disappointing, but not surprisingly so, as there was little or no surf and the crabs were abundant ! Also, by this time my peeler was none too fresh ! In calmer conditions I would have liked to pre-bait and fish for mullet at Rosscarbery. Next time !

Most sessions were only short, no more than a couple of hours, but that meant we could try two or three different venues and vary the pubs accordingly ! The nicest of them all has to be O'Sullivan's Bar at Crookhaven ! It's hard to condense 14 days fishing in a report, such as this, but if anyone would like more detailed information, just drop me a line !

Just thought I'd add that mack were abundant everywhere, despite the windy conditions. We always got enough in 15/20 minutes for bait and the BBQ !

couldnt pick a nicer area to fish 9lb huss in bantry excellent and plenty of good sized fish happy days!

Fishy, here's a smaller one taken on my first session at Bantry. One of the rare days without wind, but we had fog and torrential rain to make up for it !

I guess you can't help but notice the spots of rain on the lens ! It took 15 mins to persuade my good lady to get out of the car and take a snap and what a snap !

nice fishing .....will have to make a trip west by the sound of it,love them deep water marks from the shore,you never know what they'll throw up!!!

Nice report and some good results. Heading to the SW myself this week and always try to get 1 day down the Beara/Sheepshead. Still after that big huss.
