Clogerhead and Port Beach Area

Duration: 6hrs thu nite (9pm-3am), 4hrs fri afternoon (1pm-5pm)

Tide:incoming both times

Weather: nice thu nite, some rain on fri

Bait: rag, squid, mac, lug, razor

Rigs: 2 hook fappers, 1 up 1 downs, pullys

Results: 1 foul hooked whiting, i Small flounder..




Report: Decided yesterday to do a bit of night fishing of Clogerhead pier as the beaches were still a bit weedy, with high tide around 2am we arrived there at 8.30 and set about fishing about 9. What a nightmare, we expected the first hour or so to be quiet enough but not even a nibble by midnight. We decided to fish on as maybe something will come in with the last 2 hrs of the flood, and the result, one tiny fouled hooked whiting, not even a sigh of a fish. I have never seen the water as calm in the pier, hardly even a breeze. Even the seals cleared off after a few hours, i should have taken the hint. After such a disappointment, we decided to meet up again in the afternoon in the port beach area, i should have stayed at home. Conditions perfect, nice waves, water clearing, hardly any weed, but again, nothing about. I have fished these areas a good few years now and this has been the worst years fishing i can remember.. I hope its not a sign of things to come..

Has anyone had a decent bait fishing session on the louth / meath beaches in the last while iv tried laytown a few times but seems to be dead since april,may,not even flounders what the hell is goin on?

last time i was in Clogher (report is somewhere) I hooked into alot of small whitting, and one dab, but again all small no keepers, But bro-inlaw was out about a week or two ago mackerel bashin and he got 4, and another mate of mine got 9, as far as flounders etc hmmm... I was thinking about that place... looking at the lay of the land, i'm going to make a plan about fishin the beach area next to it, and possible spinning over the rough ground up to the harbour wall, theres gotta be winter fish there of decent size!! and yes i know theres seals and various birds but every harbour has them, but yet there is still fish about and of decent sizes so my thinkin is to fish it at various times/tides / and weather conditions what I've noticed with most beaches north of Dublin, is beaches on that side have a massive difference in tides, some you could walk out miles on till you hit the water at low tide AND each having various degrees of danger from soft sand to a flooding tide behind you, I think maybe thats one reason why its difficult to fish these locations, (apart from the crabs lovin it!! sorry about the Mac Donalds pun ) but its what makes it better as well as you really have to put the work in and at some stage you will be rewarded. Im going to wait and see if we get a good decent breeze to blow the weed off this side of the country then see how things fish (either that or im putting the weed on ebay!!! someone out there wants it

As eoghanb has just said, there is nothing about on these beaches on the louth/meath coastline for the last few months. I know a few anglers are still getting some fish including the odd bass, but as i said in the report, its nothing like it was for the last few years. I know what you mean about putting the hours in etc Creep, but thats exactly what ive been doing for years along this stretch, in all tides, weather and time of year. You were always gonna get a handful of flatties, but to even get one now to beat the blank can be a struggle. If anyone else has fished this coastline, share your thoughts about this years angling, dont mention any exact marks, just how you found the fishing this year in general.. Cheers...

Disaster. Have fished all along the coast from Clogherhead to Dunany to Greenore. Caught nothing of note. And the last few weeks have seen a lot of weed which hinders bottom fishing. However have seen mackerel being caught on the pier at Clogherhead and regardless of what anybody may think of these so called "bashers" its still encouraging to see a fish being reeled in. My personal preference is to fish the beaches for bass and I will continue to do so regardless. But I will take a nice mackerel anyday.

Myself and the brother fished a Louth beach in June for 4-5 hrs around high tide into darkness for just 1 bite which produced a small flounder.
