I fished Blackhead in Clare in August and the litter wasn't too bad. Fished Sorrento point last week, again not too bad. Could the penny be dropping?

Have just read the post that chuckaroo wrote with the link and that's fine for the north of Ireland( no disrecpt lads but read on ) but is there any people IE.. DCC, Fingal co co etc that will be willing to help us out on the litter problem.... When I get a copy of the sign that was made up by Donal I will be handing it out to the tackle shops in my area

Its not just the Dublin area I( like most of us ) fish but going to courtown and the beach was dirty but not to bad as the swell took a lot of the crap out to see and there were very big waves breaking( be careful that you don't get surrounded by the water as I nearly was wanted to stay but got to dangerous ) on the beach real shame but cleaned up where i was fishing saying that south Dublin beach was spotless....

Is it a north side problem I wonder..

sparkey I see what you are sayin, that TidyNI are only in Northern Ireland. Regardless however, TidyNI were limited as to the assistance they could and would offer us.
By all means approach your local councils and see if they can do anything, or see if there are any environmental organisations close to you that are willing to help, but the chances they wont be willing to send staff onto rocks/piers etc either. It would be interesting to see their response down there though and to see if they offer any assistance. good luck

The Irish Federation of Sea Angling (IFSA) on the other hand incorporates the whole of Ireland and is represented in the 4 provinces; the Angling Council of Ireland (ACI) is the governing body for all the different types of angling to include sea, course, trout etc... Hopefully the ISFA and the ACI can get something done about this litter issue

well, the issue was aired for a short while, but no final decision was made as to campaigns in the public domain, feeling were that we had to look after ourselves and that the people responsible for most of the littering going on at marks around the country were not members of the IFSA, so it wasnt really our problem to sort (these were the views of some present i have to add).
We will be doing our bit as affiliatted clubs and members, as in Ulster an angler found to be littering in open competitions will be disqualified, and all anglers have been instructed that if they come onto a peg on a beach where litter is present to gather it up and remove it from the beach.
all clubs have been asked to clamp down on any members involved in littering and introduce their own policy to deal with any who do.
work will continue behind the scenes and if anything more comes of it we will keep you updated here.

fair play to you Phil.... as for marks that are constantly littered the practice of picking up the litter really does work, I know its not nice or pleasent, and I regularly bring a litter stick as part of my tackle gear now, also it impresses on people (the non-fishing sort) yes anglers do care about the environment and it starts off a mini movement.. I once over heard a father telling his child when he through an empty wrapper on the ground, and after the child told him not to, the fathers reply was "dont worry son were keeping someone in a job!" I went over and picked it up in front of him (with the litter stick) and told him "errr, your not, your basicaly a pig" and walked to the nearest bin.

thats somewhat a little disappointing Phil to be honest. I can obviously see how the IFSA don't feel directly responsible for all the litter but I was hoping, in any way possible, for some proactive action being taken - i.e. action to discourage the littering within the public domain on behalf of the IFSA. Maybe this is not in the interests of the IFSA, or indeed part of their objectives(?), I dont know, but thanks for responding. I am going to approach the ACI in earnest now.
Otherwise, all the other efforts the IFSA are making sound very encouraging, great stuff!
Would also be very interested to hear if 'anything more comes of it' in the future...
cheers
