Hi I need a new fixed spool reel for my 9.5" spinning rod. im looking to spend around £30 - £50.
Can anybody rate the Shakespeare Salt Surf reels? i was also looking at Shimano Navi and Biomasters but they are all well over my price range, are there any shimano at this price or anything else anyone could recommend?? anyone got one for sale?
Last thing, how come the shimano hyperloops are so much cheaper? - are they of far inferior quality?
ive had a lovely little wychwood extremis FD40 (rrp £30) that i had become very attached to but after 4 years it has eventually given up the ghost.
The hyper loop is a freshwater real as far as I know , I have one in the car i find it great for rivers but only with light plugs and spinners . The shakespear range i find ok for light sea work as they strain under weight but if your looking to go after bass with jellys the salt would hold up. Not a patch on Shimano sea range as they are far smoother on the retrieve and are a joy to use

think shimano is the way to go but just cant believe they havent produced any models within my price range.
am stilll considering going back to the wychwoods and now also looking at Tubertini Radio reels....??
still not sure yet. want something decent and durable, nice fine drag, strong, plenty of ball bearing etc etc

you'll pick up a penn for fifty notes new or one of the okuma range. Have a good shop around and you'll get somethin decent . I use my pike reels for spinning and their grand although if i get a string of pollock on feathers it strains. If your bass fishing use the big pit reels and you'll be grand

hi Oli, thanks for that. yes i was worried about the size of them! im not an expert on sizes and you are probably totally right. i didnt want anything too big, especially from ordering online.
i had a look at that penn there and its a very nice looking reel. however, i have opted for a SHIMANO NEXAVE 4000 RC SPINNING REEL which was £40. I got it from The Fishing Tackle Shop, Cookstown, Co.Tyrone on ebay.
it looks and sounds pretty good so lets hope so..!

and I actually opted for something very similar, in the same range! (but purchased it from somewhere a bit closer to home.. )

SHIMANO NEXAVE 4000 will b good for your spin,good size and reel is nt bad,is good think to look at reels before u buying them,i took that penn couse it was the same size 400 like daiwas(cheep one dnt remember which model it was)but penn was a bit smaller and lighter,anyway cnt go wrong with shimanos
get on Ebay and try and get a Shimano Stradic or Shimano Baitrunner excellent spinning reels that can handle good size fish that wont let you down and if your lucky often get second hand ones loaded with braid as a bonus.

yeah, i saw those reels and considered them but the stradic was too pricey and i prefered the look of the nexave over the baitrunners..
used it for the first time today..... very nice indeed for a reasonably priced little reel. very smooth.
caught a few nice pollack and a cod using it
hope it lasts a while
Hey chuck I was about to jump in and say I got myself a lovely shimano exage 4000, I havent had a chance for anything big on it yet but it handled a 2-3lb coallie and a few mackeral no problem, I use braid on it with a mono leader.
I also use it for carp fishing when its a lazy day with 8lb line through, altho my old fibre glass daiwa rod was tip to handle haha
that nexave will do the same job, keep in mind a spare spool can be used for anything, I use it for mullet/carp anything that I only fish for on the rare occasion, just use lighter line.
These things never seem to be in stock anywhere I now mass buy mine, but it saves a lot of trouble and you can just change spinners on and off no problem
but after 4 years it has eventually given up the ghost. 
(but purchased it from somewhere a bit closer to home.. 
)
