hunt for turbot

#1 Post by chuckaroo »

People:mesel

Duration:5hours

Tide:coming in

Weather:fine

Bait:rag and mack

Rigs:flappers

Results: 4 dab, 1 flounder (i think), 2 coley, 1 mackerel, 1 dogfish

Report:
headed to a mark on the north antrim coast to see if i could add to my species count for the year.. was dead keen to get a turbot. i have been to this mark before with a friend and have had mack on the fly, and he got a turbot. i can remember him saying the first time he took me "you'll get turbot here, wait and see. here, i'll catch you one now" and so he did. so, i though cool, this is a great turbot mark. not! i have been back maybe 10 times since and not a sniff of a turbot. same story today. :P
ive been using same tactics he used during all state of tides, same time of year etc etc. he must have been a jammy get that day..
so anyway, ended up with a handful of dab which was nice, a flounder (can someone confirm this plse - im pretty sure it is but it had brown dab-like spots on it which confused me a little..), an obliging mack that i had for supper  , 2 coley - one coley on the fly, and a doggie on the last cast just as it was getting dark.
all-in-all an ok session but those turbot eluded me... yet again! :? :?
thought i'd put up a few pics for the hell of it...

nice catch there boss.

there are decent size turbo's on downhill and benone- some in around the 1lb mark.

small fish baits/hooks at your feet, approx 10 - 30m out is all.

good luck

If it's any use to you mate a man I know told me his nephew picked up a 5lb and 6lb Turbot off Benone, towards the shooting range, last week. My sister picked up a few last year off Carnlough beach in front of the playpark. Looked like a nice enough session all the same, well done.

ps. I'm sure you seen the 10lb Turbot reported here from Benone last year.

The dab if rubbed from the tail to the head is rough all the way
The flounder is slimy but has a rough area as marked
The plaice is smooth to rub but has some bony little lumps near its head

All 3 can have orange spots

Hey mate, I may be taking a trip to downhill or benone on sunday depending on a few things, last time we picked up about 60 flounder and 3/4 turbot of benone, we used silver strips of mackeral on a 2hook loop rig with size 4's,

Ive heard the point up there you can expect some decent size, none of ours were much bigger than 20-30cm but still got them of the list.

If I know im going ill let you know and maybe meet up, everyone of ours we picked up on the silver belly nothing but flounder on the darker top although so massive bites.

ill know by about 3 today and as im in work, i me and shep go ill throw you my number sure
