Specimen Wrasse, Co, Sligo Rock Mark August 16th & 23rd 2011

#1 Post by FisherKing »

People: Myself & the Brother

Duration: Three hours each day

Tide: Stranding

Weather: Sunny with a light south east wind

Bait: Limpet & Spinner

Rigs: Single hook Wrasse rig

Results: Day 1: five Ballan wrasse, Day 2: five Pollock & countless Mackerel

Report:

16th

Haven’t been out fishing in weeks due to work so made the most of the two sessions I got in with the first one been a big Wrasse hunt  arrived at the mark to find I couldn’t fish the best spots with the swells so had to settle for the sheltered gully, baited up with four medium sized Limpets dropped down under my feet it was slow at first until I hooked & landed my first of the day a nice fish of just over the pound mark followed by three more before it went slack so moved to another sheltered gully a couple of hundred yards down the rock dropped the bait to about a foot off the bottom & started to get some good hits but no hook ups  it went quiet for twenty minutes or so until I got a few good tugs on the line but missed the fish I was starting to think the big Wrasse were outsmarting me so was going to call it day until I got a great bite but missed so rod in hand I waited for the second attack & bang... I struck & connected with decent fish after a great scrap I landed a fine Wrasse of just over specimen size 8) happy days a few quick pics & back she went.. Baited up again & lost a bigger fish in the kelp!!!

23rd

Headed to my favourite rock mark for spot of spinning only to find a lobster pot with a Hugh length of rope taking up most of the area  making it very hard to fish but luckily managed to get five Pollock nothing big with the best been two pound, seen a lovely Trout of about six pound jump a few times but wouldn’t take the spinner, after an hour I packed up to meet the brother at another mark a few miles up the coast.
Arrived at mark to see shoals of Mackerel feeding on sprat & Sand eels on the surface & it was a fish a cast any amount of all good size mackerel, great to see so decent shoals about compared to last year!!!
