Hawk Cliff 28/8/11 SWFF

#1 Post by jack01986 »

People: Me

Duration: About an hour.

Tide: Rising

Weather: Dry

Results: 5 pollack

Report: Decided to head out this evening with the fly rod to try catch some pollack, went down to the usual spot and they didn't disappoint. Got them all on the same fly a small blue fly with eyes doesnt have a name. No real size to them but they put up a good scrap on the fly rod, biggest was about 3/4lb.

That is a beautiful pollack all the same there Jack, as Peakle says 1st fish a coley, big white lateral line. Your pollack is lovely.

I was out SWFFing myself there this evening, tried a spot that disappointed once before and it was a similar experience this evening, all I caught were some bits of weed this time. Did see a trout or 2 jump but thats all I have to report.

Good photo above, very nice.

Deffo not a coalie, the fish just moved as I took the picture so its a bit slanted in the shot though the pic does make it look like one. Was a nice evening to get out after all the showers earlier.

Hi Jack, your first fish, the top one is a coley. There is no question.

The second fish is a lovely clean pollack. The white lateral line is but one feature that makes it a coley. Its the obvious feature. If you put those 2 fish together you would see the differences clearly. They are different shaped species regardless of colouration.

Well Jack,

tell you maybe the best way of all for differentiatin! Coleys fight like fish twice their size on a fly, I'd say youve already noticed that.

I see youve had some trout, any big ones? My biggest one this year is a staggering 1lb. Have been connected to some much better ones on spinner but cant keep a hold of the gits. Fri night just as the light was going I got an unmerciful take to a spinner, 2 savage yanks and off. Drag should have been a lot looser AND I shouldnt welly into them as I tend to. Prob is catching numerous pollack for every take from a trout, bad habits are automatic. They would drive you insane.

If only I would listen to my own advice and persevere with the bloody fly rod.

Any secret flies for sea trout you want to share????? Just tied up some things to try out after that slap in the teeth on Fri.

Cathal.

I've mostly being doing trout fishing these days. Best trout so far this year is a 3.5lb brownie from the corrib. The coalie did put up a noticeably better fight. No sea trout joy for me yet, something white and blue with not to big a profile. Plenty of them where I fish but out of fly range mostly.

Thats a superb brownie well done on that one. I hear you about the sea trout, they seem to leap for fun way out of range just to tease you.

Great brownie.
