Re: Mackerel Reports '11 here...
my self and Emily my 10 yearold
Location was Dunmore east harbour brake water.
Caught 2 maks
we started fishing just before low tide and fished the brake water for two hours and caught two maks.
It rained all the time we were there, as soon as it got better we moved out to the flat rocks to try for some pollock with no luck.
There were 3 other people fishing out on the flat rocks as well and i never seen them catch any thing either.
We ended up having to leave a hour before high water as it started to rain rather hard again and i was all out of dry clothes.
Cant wait till the summer gets here. lol....

Re: Mackerel Reports '11 here...
3 hours at Ardglass behind the golf course over high tide. Not a single fish between 6 rods. What has happened to this mark???
i get by with a little help from my friends.
Re: Mackerel Reports '11 here...
Fished Ballydavid head this morning on outward tide, no macs but caught some lively pollock.
I hear that there are few mackeral being caught in Smerwick harbour lately but that there are plenty of macks off Brandon pier.
Hopefully they'll be coming over here soon???

Fished dun laoghaire tonight off north pier from 6pm to 8pm. High tide was about 7.30pm. Caught 2 macks. Most guys catching 1 or 2 but no more. Generally pretty quiet.
Fished off helvic head, dungarvan on Friday and Saturday last. Both times about hour or so before an evening high tide. Cleaned up Friday, caught about 50 with 2 rods. Best sport in years. Threw most of them back in. Saturday, same weather, same spot, same gear, caught 1 between us. Guess just case of pot luck but they are definitely in around helvic in good numbers.

Re: Mackerel Reports '11 here...
Fished Ballycotton over low water last saturday (20th) and there were a good few mackerel around. Tried a few lug on the bottom too but no joy.
Fished by the quay/train station in Cobh on sunday afternoon but no joy.
had a nice plaice myself and my 4year old had his first ever fish (a flounder) from Ballybrannigan on sunday too!

Fished dun laoghaire again this evening for about 2.5 hrs from 6.15pm to 8.45pm. High tide at 8.50pm. Between 2 rods caught 2 macks (1 very small and threw back) and small pollack. Few being caught buy only in ones here and there. Was beautiful evening, warm and almost flat calm.
While macks not around in numbers have managed to avoid blanks so far.

24 Aug 2011 Tramore, Waterford at the Guilamine, counted 16 rods and zero mackerel. 18 rods x 6 hooks = 108 chances per cast and nothing??? I didnt even bother putting my rod together, stayed for an hour and a half.
hope they come soon as im getting hungry

Re: Mackerel Reports '11 here...
18th August or there abouts
Dun Laoghaire, end of the west pier
From about an hour before high-tide until about two hours after
My mate caught 11 mackerel - mostly small - on green/tinsely feathers
I caught zippo on black feathers and blamed it on bad light and birthday hangover.
A few others catching small macks, a sandeel and a seal (not landed) on standard pink feathers.
Have noticed so far this year that all the mackerel at this mark have been caught off the wall facing out to the open sea (the nose-bleed position) - none inside the harbour - and its only rocks and shopping trolleys if you cast towards Howth.
Too much rubbish lying around as usual: I can't stand people who leave rubbish and then say it's the corporation's job to clear it up. If you spend several hours fishing within 10 metres of a proper, provided rubbish bin there is no excuse for not clearing up - oh except for the all important 'not wanting to look un-cool in front of your mates'.

Was out in the boat by the refinery on Sun and there was just a blanket of small guys. out between the 2 forts there were less but bigger guys.Dean wrote:Where are all the mack's gone? Anyone catching mackeral in Cobh or around cork?
Was out around the harbour on Tues and the place was crawling with them, catching them every single drop... I would be surprised if there were not a few being picked up off the deepwater quay in Cobh.
On Tuesday there were a pod of dolphins pushing them onto the rocks off crosshaven and there were lads picking htem up off the rocks there...
So many they were annoying... had to keep changing tactics to get to the bottom as they were being snapped on the drop!

Howth Harbour 25/08/11
3 Macs @ 8:50pm.
HW 9:45pm
SW 15-20 Wind.
Low Pressure
When up to Howth Harbour to catch some Pollack. No joy (Tips please!). However, I did see a seal chasing some Macs (I think), they were just popping there heads out of the water. Switched to a 3 shrimp/hookai/flasher rig. No luck either, until the "last" cast. Just about to head off when I felt the familiar wriggle, then it got heavier, then heavier again!. Full house. One decent sized one, plus two medium sized ones. Cast out again to same spot and had a couple of really big ones on the line but didn't manage to land them.
