freelining???

what is freelining?? . i understand that the bait is suppose to swim freely . i just dont understand how you are suppose to cast or get the bait near the bottom without a weight . if anyone has any info or a diagram it would be great .

Dont really have a target species yet just wanted to get the basics of freeling
