The Kingdom known as Kerry... 10/7/11

#1 Post by stevecrow74 »

People:myself and herslef

Duration:quite a few hours incl. travel..

Tide:High water to low water

Weather:sun sun sun with a light breeze

Bait:lug sandeel peeler mackerel

Rigs: one up one downs

Results: 2 undulate ray, dogfish, tub gurnard, corkwing wrasse and about 20 or so dab...

Report:
With a late night, its hard to do early mornings, but this morning was an exception. I was up at 8:30am and rearing to go, but alas herself was sound asleep and making no movements of waking even with a finger poked between the ribs!!
so a quick search for the car keys and within 20 mins the car was packed and ready for my chauffeur to wake up, but alas.. still no movement until 10:30..
Now my question is why do women think they have to put on makeup even when they know they are going fishing?? its Fishing.. NOT Fashion...
and on the road south we went, with a quick pit stop for coffee and danish pastries.
after a couple of hours in the car, going through different seasons, rainy season, windy season, mist and fog season we finally made it to our destination to the most very rare season of them all.. summer...
And in good time too, just a couple of hours before high tide..

There were quite a few other people set up, with various camper vans and the likes with BBQ's smoking and the smell of sausage and chicken wafting in the air.. enought to wet anybody's appitite.

with a quick set up and realising i had no shock leader on the multiplier i had to set up herself's BZE to get a bait into the water quickly!. A couple of minutes i had my baits nicely fired out to a distance that would make most people say 'you need to go further than that here'.
and with enough time to turn around to find herself, sunning herself by the car with a book open i turned around to see my rod bounce a couple of times..
Hardly there 10 minutes and i had caught my first undulate of the year. quick photo and release and baits went out again..
then i set up my spinning rod with a small flowing trace for close action to see what was literally at my feet, there was nothing for about 15 mins until a lad came over and gave me the rest of his bait which consisted of peeler and lug.. fair play that man from cork is all i can say.. as soon as he left i put lug on the very light rig and cast .. well it was hardly a cast.. more of a little lob of less than 6 yrds and within seconds i was pulling out a small dab, lobbed out another lug, just as i saw my rod tip bounce again, and i was into another undulate, and my spinning rod started to bounce, so with a quick car back to the car saw herself running down to me to pull in another small dab as i pulled in a slightly larger undulate than the first one. and when both rods were baited and cast , her BZE started to bounce all over the place.
At this time i could see quite a few of the other anglers looking over in sheer amazement as herself pulled in a dogfish and i managed another dab on the spinning rod.. as i was unhooking the doggie a few of the other anglers made their way over to us and asked what baits we were using, and it was no different to what they had, the only difference was they were fishing there for about 4 hours at that stage and no one at the mark had caught anything, only a couple of bites, but no fish landed, and within half an hour of us arriving we had quite a few fish between us!
after a couple of hours catching dabs utter confusion happened with the rest of the anglers when i pulled in a corkwing wrasse which was soon followed by a tub gurnard.. i honestly think a few of them just gave up and went home after that as the place seemed to empty fairly fast after that.. and with half the tide gone it was going to be interesting to see what else we could catch.. well i know herself was more intent on catching rays of sun than anything else.
I saw a few mullet cruising about, and for an hour or so i tried to see if i could interest them in any baits, but nothing was happening, and may have put a bit too much effort in trying to catch them as when i went to change baits on the other two rods, it seems that crabs absconded with my hooks??
probably just as well because i had lost track of all time and ended up fishing an hour more than i originally intended
and as i was packing up sudden realisation that the only food we had was in the morning, and 7pm was a bit too long to go without food!!
so off we went to find a chippy of any form and the one we did find had a queue out the door... but by god was it worth it.. i'm not sure if it was pure hunger or the fact they were really good chips, but i will be eating in that establishment again.. if i remember where it is!!!

Lovely report and some ncie looking rays.
I know that feeling oh so well!!
Thankfully this time she was more interested in rays of sun, otherwise the report would have read very differently!!

All the dab were small, between 10 - 15cm and only taken on lug, if it wasn't for the lad from cork giving me his excess bait as he left i doubt I would have caught one!!
