The latest issue of the BASS mag dropped onto my mat the last day. Interesting letter about two English guys who have been coming here to fish bass for the last 7 years. They usually fished Kerry but after a few thin years there they decided to give Kilmore Quay a shot. Were not amused to be talking to other 'anglers' who made a point of mentioning that bass went ?30 for a 5lb fish. Seems this happened a few times. They left pretty disenchanted with the whole thing. Very peeved about the lip service our government pays to bass protection, with absolutely no sign of enforcement.

It's high time the Depts of marine and Tourism woke up to what's happening to bass here between illegal 'angling', commercial fishing (seems the French, now denied access to the UK coast are busy strip-mining bass off the Irish coast) etc and the effect this is having on bass stocks here and the knock on effect to tourism. The word is truly out that the Irish really don't care about anglers, bass or tourism.

We're already the laughing stock of Europe as regards fishery protection. What dubious honour are we going for next, World Champion marine resource squanderer? It's news like the above that make me embarrased to describe myself as Irish and an angler.

I'm into everything except coffins, mate. Came close today though, was refurbishing a few family graves.
