Sorry to hear mate. The smoothie in my avatar took my rod and reel off the tripod and was heading out to sea with it. I was standing by the rod all night with the drag off and the one time I cast out, didn't take the drag off and walk over to chat quickly to a mate!!! Sods law. If I was 15-20 more seconds away it was gone.

Hello everyone, interesting discussion.
Just thought I'd add that a few years ago I used prawns as bait for smoothies and they definitely take them. I used them whole, just took the claws off. They stayed on the hook well, they are nice and bright and probably as tasty to smoothies as they are to us. At the time I bought them to eat myself but thought I'd try as few as bait.
Cheers

kevin where they fresh /frozen or cooked ,as i have heard of people using cooked but dont think they would be much use :?: i did get plenty of fish over in turkey on salted ones the salt takes all the moisture out and toughens em up for the hook.

Just wondering how much difference it makes to fish at night? can they still be got during the day?
Also what would be the best months?
I've never tried for them before so was thinking I might take a trip down to Wicklow some evening this week and give it a shot.

they feed just as well in daylight as they do in darkness ,alot of it is to do with tide personally i find bigger tides better ,good quality bait is a must ,sour crab just wont cut the mustard  if you cant get crab try rag and squid ,the best tides are this week, 8) big mothers 8)

Im gonna try for hounds fri night before Jimmy Smith. Is there anywhere within sensible driving distance of sean ogs throwing them up this year? (Sensible, as in I'll be driving a lorry all day and am driving to wexford from antrim at 16:30). I usually fish dogs rock/courtown, but friends down there say its patchy enough this year. :?:

The golden rule I use for Smoothies is big tides and top of the tide coming into the dark this usually finds the better smoothies. Oh!! and crab for bait!!
Kstaff has always been the new black in my eyes anyway!!!!!!!
