Hello people from Ireland

#1 Post by Bigfish »

Hello,

My name is Harry. And I'm from Holland. I going to Ireland in April, (near Shannon river). We want to fish in the Atlantic ocean (beachfishing :? ??).
So I'm wondering what you take along when you go beachfishing?
I want to fish on stingray's, (baby)sharks, all that stuff that we can not catch in Holland. (for example not a flounder
I have a couple questions:
 I've got a reel (brand) "Ambassadeur 6500C4") with 0.35mm mainline(is that ok.?)
 What is the best bait? (mackerel......
 Size of the hook?
 Traceline ......mm?

if you got some suggestions. please write..

Many thanks Harry

Good evening Harry,

I live in the North of Ireland, near Belfast so I am not familiar with the west of Ireland (near Shannon), try this link http://www.sea-angling-ireland.org/map% ... 0shore.htm
and click on the County that you are staying in. It will give you some idea of the best marks to fish.

Most shore anglers in Ireland use 15lb (0.35mm) or 18lb (0.40mm) line for fishing from the beach with at least a 50lb (0.90mm) trace line combined with a 4oz (150g) or 5oz (175g) sinker.

If you are targeting ray you will need at least a 3/0 hook, for baby sharks (tope etc.) you will probably need a strong 6/0 O'Shaughnessy hook.

Best baits to use are mackeral, sandeel, squid or lug/rag worm. Most of the baits can be bought in the local tackle shops.

The Abu Ambassadeur reel is fine for beach work but you will need something stronger if you want to fish rough ground (Penn 525 or Diawa SL30SH). You can expect to catch good pollack, wrasse and bull huss over rough ground near the River Shannon.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

For the Shannon Estuary many of the marks are rocky with strongish tides. I wouldn't use anything less than 0.4mm line for the Estuary along with pulley rigs. As for hooks standard aberdeen hooks from 2/0 to 4/0 depending on the size of baits will handle most fish but tend to be to springy for strap conger. I normally use mustad vikings for mackerel and bending out of snags. For most marks I use 5oz minium and normally use 6oz to hold the tide and have 7oz leads as a back up for the really strong tide runs. Distance casting is not an issue on the whole except for Carrigaholt where the clean ground means you can step back down to 0.35mm. Let me know where you want to fish and I'll try and give you any help I can.

We are staying in Kilkee, about 5 min. from the ocean April 21th 2006.
I want to try to fish on rays, bull huss and maybe a (baby)(blue) shark's...... If it is the right season (spring??)... I've got a main line from 0.35mm (13.7kg) or do I need 0.40mm.
By the way.. can you also fish with pilchards. When I was in New Zealand, it was there nr1. in bait...And what is the best for fishing the Shannon river of the Atlantic ocean..

Harry
