couple of questions

hey i am new to the forum been fishing for a good few years in all disciplines and have started to get more into shore angling, just wondering what the diffrence between a codling and a cod is? am i right in saying a codling is a young cod, oh and are poor cod and pouting the same thing? cheers.

Your correct in saying Young Cod are also known as Codling.... However Poor Cod and Pouting are not the same the front dorsal fin and the front anal fin on a Poor Cod do not overlap, as is the case with a Pouting whose front anal fin is well forward and will be in the middle of the front dorsal fin. The Pouting has a deeper body which will often have dark horizontal bands on it particularly in larger fish juvenilles are often missing these bands.

I've also found that unlike a codling, a pouting will leave your hand covered in little scales...... :roll: ........a less scientific way to tell, especially if you don't encounter the two species too often

The eyes tend to be larger on a poor cod aswell.

Poorcod

Note the slightly shallower body profile which is common in most poor cod which I forgot to mention earlier, however some can have a deeper body which confuses things - but notice the size of the eye, bigger in the poor cod, and for me personally thats the easiest way to differentiate.
