florecent blue light

Hi
I was fishing down in dalkey on sat night and at the end of a bad night my brother in law reeled in his line on the weight was a florecent blue light it was a slimey material that faded fairly fast when out of the water anyone any ideas

I was fishing in Coliemore Harbour behind Dalkey village in October with a friend and the sea was incredible looking - on the top of any wave that was breaking was a real distinctive bluey glow. It was also noticable on our reels and terminal tackle for a while after we reeled in but would then fade. I'm not sure if this plankton was particularly prevalent that night or if it was just more noticable because it was such a dark night (no moon)

I looked into it the next day and it turns out that its quite common - its a bioluminescent plankton (i.e. a type of plankton that glows in the dark!)

Hate to inform you, but it has. Rather a lot of them. Some even government approved.

The bioluminescent plankton makes for a pretty impressive sight when you drive an outboard through it. Looks like you've got a rocket strapped to the keel.....

Used to see it alot out in thialand on the night dives, glows more you kick it up. Did'nt know it was around these parts...must have a look for it next time im skinny dipping :D

Any conditions that it is more common in..water nights, less chop ? Or is it aways there...?
