Rock Mark, North Antrim Coast, 1/6/11

#1 Post by Der Baron »

People: Me and Fishy

Duration: 18:00-22:30

Tide: Rising

Weather: Spectacular, with a breezy South westerly

Bait: Rag, mac, sandeel

Rigs: Flappers, Pulleys, and the odd throw with a spinner

Results: Me; 2 Pollack, 1 Cod, 1 Flounder, and 5 Dogs
Fishy: 1 Pollack, 2 Cod, 1 Coalie, and 4 dogs

Report:
First outing in about six weeks, we decided to try a new mark for us, but we were still restricted by the strong south westerly breezes. Got to the park, got the gear loaded up, and off we yumped towards the mark. A number of boys fishing on the near by beach, but not a lot happening at that time. We could see the mark in the distance, but it was one of those days, it didn't appear to be getting any closer as we marched over the endless spits of rock, jutting out infront of us. After about 20 mins of hard grind we arrived at the mark, with the sweat tripping me, and needing to re-hydrate asap. We stood at the mark and surveyed it for a bit, and decided that we should split up, but only 50 yards apart or so on two separate pieces of rock, mine slightly closer to the shore. My first rod, I put a pulley on with a big bait, ( Always living in hope), the other a 2 hook flapper, but with slightly longer flowing trace.
I didn't have to wait long for the flapper rig to start rattling, and with a good couple of pulls, but unfortunately no fish to show. I brought the rig in and changed it to a 3 hook flapper with shorter snood length. With in seconds bang and the first fish landed, a nice we Pollack of about 2 lbs. Fishy had the same experience, with 2 bites and no fish, and on his third cast, a double hit of 2 nice we cod, the biggest about a 1lb and a half. As he was bringing those in, I had another almighty rattle, and couldn't believe my eyes when I got the rig in, a largish flounder of about 30cm on the top trace, a 3lb Pollack on the middle and a lovely wee cod of about a 1lb on the bottom, treble hook-up, treble species, brilliant. From then on and until dusk arrived, bites where steady and then the doggies arrived, I think we had about 9 between us. Kev had a cracking Pollack of about 4lb, which put up an almighty scrap on the powerstix, while I finished off the evening with something that would just not show itself, and put the little abu blue yonder under considerable strain. I never even got to see my leader, reckon if I had have managed to get my shock leader onto the reel, I could have bullied it a bit more, but sadly not to be. It was a big fish, no ideas what it was, probably a good Pollack, the way it was making diving runs, but it eventually managed to run me into kelp, and pinged my line. Ah well, it wasn't to be, but what a rush. Kev managed to console me a bit, with a couple of swigs of good quality Port, and a few crackers with smoked cheese. All in all a good evenings fishing, which made the trek back to the car park, slightly easier, but no less sweaty.
I have to say it's nice to try somewhere for the first time and get a great result, and we will certainly back there, a lot more potential, I would say.

Thanks lads.
Yes SPB they were all the same deep red, they are a beautiful colour, we have had them from the boat up to about 6lb near there. We were trying to put the baits on clean ground between the big flourishes of kelp beds, that lie out on open sand around there, and it seemed to draw them out nicely!

Great stuff mate, and its good to find a new mark. Found a new one myself on sunday by luck. As it was blowing a gale in ballintoy we moved round the coast in a more sheltered place near ballycastle, to a totally new mark to us and got some good pollack. Finding a new mark is all part of the buzz of shore fishing, if it works out. Catching a treble means youve chosen the mark wisely, and long may it last for you guys.... Well Done!!
