Portrush sat 7th May 11 - a PB wrasse
People: me
Duration:5hrs from around half 9
Tide: not sure
Weather: lovely
Bait:rag and mackeral
Rigs: feathers, floats and others
Results: 3 sand eel, 1 wrasse and 1 sea trout
Report:Decided with the lovely weather we have had to head out for a spot of fishing. Landed down and decided to purchase a new spinning rod as I broke the other one that I had.
Headed down to Ramoure head for a try with a rod at distance and to give my spinning rod a bash with some fluff chucking!
Weather was brilliant though the fecking flees that were there was unreal. I have never been pestered as much in my life, so much so that I had to move a few times to get peace!
Set up my rod again and fired it out at distance with a mix of rag and mackerel. So I continue spinning away with no success when I noticed my rod take a bite on the stand. Then the road and stand got ripped down onto the rocks!! I couldn’t reel the other line in quick enough to get at the rod. It was a sight watching me spinning and jumping out to try and stand on my other rod to ensure it didn’t get pulled on out! Lol
Struck back on the rod and felt a massive weight on it. Standing pumping and reeling in and was starting to think to myself ‘I bet I have a mass of seaweed on here!
Was it feck, I seen the leader coming up and then a massive orange fish! Sweet Jesus I was over the moon, hoping and bouncing! Lol I’m sure if anyone seen me they would have though I was demented. Pulled out the fish and landed a PB wrasse! Man I was over the moon I didn’t even care if I didn’t catch another fish!! Lol it was also a new species for the year.
Nothing more happened on the rod at distance but I did persevere on the feathers and caught 3 sand eels, all foul hooked I might add.
I did get one shock though, I caught some thing on the feathers, thought it was a coalie in the water but to my surprise I pulled out a wee sea trout, well that’s what I think it is. Someone can confirm for me but if it is, it’s my first one I’ve ever caught and one off my list to catch.
Anyway it was a great day and I decided to pack up happy and head home for a stop off in the chip shop as I was starving.

Re: Portrush sat 7th May 11 - a PB wrasse
new species and a new PB
thats a good trip, which mine was as eventful
still theres always next time
you should get yourself more sensitive scales, i got electronic ones off ebay for less than a tenner and they do a good job. esp consider the majority of fish we get off the north coast are less and 10 or even 5 pounds you want to weigh them accurately

Re: Portrush sat 7th May 11 - a PB wrasse
nice fish, the head always throws a few nice ballans up, sea trout are being caught all around at the minute, mate had one just over 2lb on around the coast last week. keep those launce sandeels for bait, they are great when filleted and cut into fine strips to tip off worm baits for plaice etc around portrush.
Not the BigPhil from Irish Angler mag, I'm the original, i swear!!!!

Re: Portrush sat 7th May 11 - a PB wrasse
Lovely looking wrasse, and always nice to catch any sea trout.
Me and shep are going up to portrush on saturday to see what we can do. Gonna try the harbour but if you know a better spot pm me, was also gonna give an hour of the sand opposite side of the harbour. It'll be late around 6 - 1 in the morning so dont know where would be best.
Second time up there and first was a blank haha
