Portrush Saturday 7th May

#1 Post by yngkmd »

People just me

Duration ramore head 4pm-7pm blue pool 730pm-10pm

Tide lw 4pm

Weather mixed

Bait rag, mackerel

Rigs various

Results 1 pollock, 26 colefish, 3 wrasse

Report with the wind blowing from the south east but the seas being flat calm i figured ramore head would be a good sheltered spot for a bit of wrasse bashing. landed down and was fishing by 4, first hour was pretty unproductive with only one coalie being landed dropping a bait down the rock wall. then it started to rain, set up my big umbrella and hunkered down for 45 minutes till it stopped, during this time i landed 2 wrasse, neither of any great size. when the rain did stop the clouds completely disappeared, the sun was shining and as my spot was sheltered it was quite a pleasant evening. still very few bites so switched to a float. set it over depth by a few feet cast out and reeled in slowly so the bait was being dragged over the top of the weeds and i managed to pull out 2 more coalies and a single pollock. decided to move as i wasnt getting much so headed off to the blue pool.

got to the blue pool and as i thought the wind was going to make it difficult. wanged out rag at distance and kept the float in close. neither of them were getting a touch. the guy beside me was using tescos bought herring and was getting flatties, doggies and and huge spider crab, i on the other hand was pulling every bait in untouched, (most of the rag were very green, with the odd red one) finally pulled out a wee wrasse on the float. gave up on the float as it was too windy so put on a 1 hook bomber and lobbed it out 15 feet. after about 10 minutes i got a wee coalie, then another and another. they were only about 8-12 inches long but was good to see some fish finally. decided as they were coming thick and fast i would try out the cristmas present i got http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Travel-Blue-Pen-S ... 4989395156, caught a few more on this. it was an interesting experience ill tell you, trying to control even a wee fish on such a short rod is tricky but good fun all the same. come 10pm the coalie bashing was in full swing and i was enjoying my new cree led headlight from ebay, its great and really bright, sure its cheap chinese crap but when the hinge does break im resourceful enough to fix it better than it was originally (bold statement, will keep you posted how that pans out), anyway was catching coalies and shining my new headlight on things zooming the beam in and out and into rockpools, up at the houses etc when i notice some dark clouds looming out of the dusk on the horizon. looking at them i minute im think this could be rain so was trying to decied whether or not to stay on when the decision was made for me as the whole horizon light up with a flash of lightning. was bad enough i had to ride my motor bike home 60 miles in it, didnt want to fish in it as well. so pack up and headed off. on the ride home it was chucking it down so hard i could hardley see. but on the plus side i remember to swap out my tinted visor for the clear one so i could keep the visor closed in the dark (never have i been so happy to have done that) and secondly i tested the waterproofness of my shakespeare salt rucksack. bag was strapped to the back seat and camera was in the side pocket. whole way home i was worried about it but in the end it arrived back in belfast bone dry. result.

had a whole mackerel out at both spots for conger, neither got a take but interestingly both bait came back in minus about 4 inches of their tails.

so in conclusion, a slow day with mixed weather and wee burst of activity at the end. but if i didnt go fishing i would have been pacing around the house wishing i had gone fishing.

:D Well done on the fishing pal , I know the location very very well . However forget about the actual fishing bit as your report brings back many happy memories re riding a motor bike to fish - yes I did it for years and I loved every minute of it even though I had a car . I had a big trailie which would take me anywhere though at times could be a handfull off road .. anyhow thanks for the memory and tight lines to you.. John
