Cork Surf Schoolies 27th Apr 2011

#1 Post by tomgrey »

People: Me

Duration: 8pm -1am

Tide: High around 8ish I think

Weather: Calm

Bait: Lug and razor

Rigs: 3/0 pennel pulley, 1/0 double runner

Results: 5 Bass, 9 Flounder

Report: I got to the mark just before dusk, set-up one rod, baited up the pennel with smelly razor and threw it out about 50 yards. I was setting up the other rod but before I even had the line threaded through the eyes the first rod was hopping. I grabbed it and began retrieving, it didn't feel too big but was a spirited fight all the same, it turned out to be a nice wee 41cm bass. I got that rod back in the water and set up the other.with a a double runner rig baited with lug. I was kept busy with this rod for most of the following 2 hours with not a tap on the pennel with razor. I was just landing small flounder not much more than 20 odd cm i'd say.

I changed the pennel baited with razor to some massive black lug I had and straight away I got a decent bite. This turned out to be a bass just barely over 40 cm. He looked fairly ruffed up with lots of scale damage. I got that back in the water and straight away I was into another, smaller again this time, easily under 35cm, it was very lightly hooked. I didn't even rebait this one, I just threw it back out. Most casts were just medium lobs to find the fish. It took about 15mins for the next decent tap (besides the small flounder bites) but I missed that one...

I got 2 more bass both around 35cm with another missed hopping bite and 2 or 3 flounder all on the smaller hook rig. The bigger hooks do prevent the small flounder from hooking up but they do strip the lug all the same. All in all it was an enjoyable session, considering it was so calm I wasn't expecting much bass action but thats the most i've caught in a session so there you go, and with beautiful weather to start out with it was a cracking evening.
