Mullet on a lure - 19th April 2011
People: Me
Duration: 7.00 - 9.00 pm
Tide:HW 7.15 pm
Weather: Clear, sunny, light southeasterly wind
Bait: Lures
Rigs:
Results: 1 mullet
Report:As it was a nice sunny evening I headed out for some lure fishing. I went to the same area where I caught three bass on Sunday. I got there about 7.00 pm. I was working my way around a small bay and then spotted a shoal of fish breaching the surface in front of a mass of rotting seaweed at the back of the bay. I wasn't sure if they were mullet or bass but fired out some lures over them just in case. I did feel a few tugs but nothing made a serious attempt to take any of the lures so I realized that they must be mullet.
I moved further around the bay but nothing was biting. As the light was beginning to fade I began to move back. I had a few casts off a promontory. The mullet were starting to move back out of the bay at this stage with the dropping tide and I was casting over them. I was frequently changing lures and put on a white Asturie. I had a couple of casts with it and suddenly hooked a fish. At first I presumed it was a bass, it was giving a typical bass fight, but when I had it in very close I realized it was a mullet. I gradually eased it into a narrow gulley, reached down and grabbed it. My first ever Irish Mullet and hooked on a surface lure too!!! It weighed just over 3 lb.

It was hooked on the outside corner of the lip, looks like the fish did make a grab at the lure.CIANDOWNEY wrote: great report and even better result , well done. i foul hooked one before did you get it in the lip?
Thanks Fergal, I caught a few small mullet on holidays in Crete a couple of years ago, I had a few attempts at catching them in Ireland but never got one until now.fishy1987 wrote:nice one frankcongrats on the first irish mullet!different from your usual topclass Bass sessions
Thanks Evan, the one I got did seem to twist about a lot trying to shake the hook, but I reckon a bass of the same size would pull more strongly. I don't think I will become a convert to mullet fishing.evan699 wrote:Well done frank. Great fish. I prefer catching them to Bass. Serious fight off them.

Foul hooked one last night Frank, gave some fight weighed in a tad under 6lbs thought it was a cracking bass until I saw it, well done on landing a nice fish.
Everyone should believe in something; I believe I’ll go fishing.

Re: Mullet on a lure - 19th April 2011
Thanks guys,
I knew there were a lot of mullet about but thought there might be a bass lurking on the outskirts and was sure I had hooked one as I wasn't expecting the mullet to go for a lure.
Of course I was!!!saving private brian wrote:bet you were thinking it was a another Bass

Well done. I've never seen one "mouth hooked" on a lure like that before though I have heard of them being caught on very small lures.
