BlackHead Antrim Saturday 16th April

#1 Post by yngkmd »

People Just me

Duration 4pm-9pm

Tide LW 4pm

Weather Not too bad

Bait Rag

Rigs Float, one hook paternoster

Results Coalfish, Shore Rockling, Blenny, Wrasse, Pollock

Report After reading recent reports from Drew and Ocean ROar catching wrasse i decided it was my turn. Got a bag of rag and headed to blackhead to fish the incoming tide. i couldnt stay late since the dogs were in the house on their own and she was away out so set the alarm on my phone for 915pm. Landed down and the tide reports about it being a very very low tide were not wrong. The water there is usually only about 15ft deep at high tide so today it was barely 6ft. also as this place is a real tackle grave yard fishing the bottom is not really an option so i only had my roach rods with me for either float fishing or dropping a bait down the wall. i didnt have the rods or even the weights with me to even try and cast out to deeper water so, slightly disheartened, i scratched around in the shallow water waiting for the tide to come in.
about 20 minutes after i landed down to fools came down to pretend to fish, lets call them twit and Idiot. you could tell they werent serious anglers straight away since twits reel was only a third fool of line and Idiot started complaining about forgetting the radio so they could "get some £ucking tunes going", never mind said twit "get them £ucking beers out". but not to worry he made up for the lack of radio with his overly loud voice and mobile phone that went off every 5 minutes.
After letting out a long, drawn out, sigh i fished away. tried as i might i tried to ignore these fools but between them talking really loud and Idiot describing to twit in explicit detail that last time he got so drunk he soiled himself and them throwing all their empty beer cans in the water they were really starting to damage my calm. not that i would ever confront them on my own of course but i was still annoyed. on the other hand though there is a real art to fitting the word £uck 4 times into a 12 word sentence.
within the first 45 mins i still managed to pull out a tiny rockling and coalie, the next 45 mins were completely lifeless. decided i wasnt going to catch anything else till the tide came in a bit further and the wind was blowing near right in my face. it wasnt strong but had a wee bit of a nip in it and was starting to eat through so wedged myself into a crevice out of the wind with my flask, poker game on my phone and a 4 pack of scoth eggs. i wish i didnt bring scoth eggs since i ended up with thishttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yrjH5zIhpLw stuck in my head for the rest of the trip and still now even. so this kept me entertained for about 45 minutes during which time twit and Idiot had left, and also left empty sandwich packets, crispt packets 2 plastic bags and and empty box of beer. they were only there for 2 hours!!!, i wasnt in the mood so decided i would leave cleaning up their crap until i was going.
emerged from the crevice thinking im here to fish dammit, the wind had also changed direction and was sheltered by the cliff so was perfectly calm. stuck on a size 10 hook and went and found a rock pool, soon had 2 blennies. (another new species for the year) and a new found will to catch that wrasse. try as i might the fish were just not biting and sat there biteless until about half 7 when i picked up a wee coalie. thought that this was maybe start of the coalies coming on the feed and a few minutes later a got another bite, struck and fish on got it to the surface and it was the wrasse i was looking for, my celebratory YEEEEOOOOOOO soon turned into a NOOOOOOOOOOO as it dropped off the hook when trying to lift it out of the water. at least i knew they were there. managed another 2 coalies and then, finally (around 8pm) i got a lovely little corkwing (new species for the year and all), ZING, mission accomplished. it only took 4 hours and maybe small but i did what i set out to do. the next hour produced 3 more coalies, 1 tiny pollock and 2 more shore rockling.
in the end i didnt have to clean up as some couple out for a walk were disgusted by the mess and cleaned it up themselves, she kept throwing me dirty looks like i was responsible, she could kiss my arse but at least it saved my the hassle of having to do it.
packed up about 9 as the tide had started ripping out again and this usually kills the fishing, heading back up the path i was thinking its a pity i couldnt stay later as it such a lovely, calm, peaceful evening...then the alarm on my phone in my breast pocket went off and i nearly died. my alarm is a real loud intrusive klaxxon so when it went off in my face after the peace and quiet it was such a shock, i actually jumped backwards. so i laughed, pulled myself together and went home to walk the dogs.

not the most productive trip numbers wise but did get 2 new species for the year and 5 overall so cant complain. but most importantly i set out to catch a wrasse and dagnubbit i caught a wrasse :)

Nice one mate. Know what you mean about the litter. We were at ballintoy today and some so called anglers left 2 winemark bags a another white plastic bag with rubbish in them, when they left. It would have been so easy for them to take them home and dump them.

true, but since the summer is coming they are going to get more and more common, which is a pity but will just have to put up with it. i can get over when i am catching loads and they are catching nothing

though for me the biggest disgrace is that after both had drunk several cans and smoked a few funny cigarettes they drove home.
