Great report and photos - sounds like a great trip and you got yourself well stocked with razor too.

Thanks Frank, it was a great trip alright. The razor collecting was great crack and we are well stocked up now as you said. It was a pity that the plugging and lure fishing didn’t produce better results for us but that’s how it goes, it was still quite cold when we tried for them at the start of the trip with snow on the mountains and higher ground which I am sure didn’t help matters. As soon as the high pressure and big spring tides came and it began to heat up the bass fishing improved greatly. I think we went down a week too early and so we only got a couple of days of the improved weather before we had to head back up home. Still, it was nice to get a few and even better for me to have got the biggest one of the trip, it makes a change, it’s usually the other way around with K2 catching the bigger fish.
You have been doing well yourself lately, very well done.

Cracking session, report and photo's paula and K2, I must give the razor collecting a go myself sometime, never did it before. Would be well worth it even if I got a third of what you got there. Congrats on the golden greys and the Bass

Thanks Tony. The Golden Grey Mullet was one of the highlights of the trip for sure. It was great to get fishing for the mullet early on in the year, up here at home we won’t get a chance to fish for them until around May/June time when the water heats up.
You should give the razor collecting a go, they are a fantastic bait for the Bass and its great fun going down and picking some of your own. Over the next big spring tides go out and have a look for them at low tide, if you look close enough they may be there. Good luck.

Thanks Fergal. I did do abit of digging for the lugworm but I have to admit, it’s not a job I enjoy. They are great bait for the bass and flounder which is why I dig for them but if I can get out of it I do. The razor we hand picked, no digging involved when collecting them so as to minimise and prevent any damage being done to the beds.

Great report and nice pictures Paula. I Will be running up and down the Kerry shores in just over a week, boosting Irelands fishing economy. To say I am looking forward To it would be an understatement. Good To see some mullet, I Will surely have a crack at them.

Thanks Brian You'll be too busy with the wrasse and pollock to worry about the mullet. That's the weather now that you need to be able to hit the rocks, at last.

great pics and report paula ...love the ones with the mullet in shoals,,,,,they just wreck my head them fish..,going to give them ago soon thou,,,haha love pulling the razors too.gotsome there a week or two back.i end up eating more of them than keeping for bait

Thanks Brian The mullet do wreck your head, but they are great crack. I hear there's some brilliant spots down in Mayo to fish for them, definately give them a go if you get the chance.

Thanks grady. There's plenty of mullet close to where you are, Killybegs harbour used to be full of them. K2 and I used to go every year down there in July for a week and there was loads of them about then. We had some great crack with them. We haven't been in a few years but it would be worth a look if you wanting to have a go at them yourself close to home.

How did you manage to get the Razor? With Salt?

Thanks Colin To collect the razors we used purely our hands to pick them, no tools. We tried salt but it didn’t work that well at the particular location we where. We just looked for the mark on the sand where we knew the razor was and slowly approached so as not to spook it as the slightest vibration makes them go deeper under the sand making it harder to get them if not out of our reach completely. We went in from the side wedging it in with our fingers so it couldn’t move any further and with the other hand we got hold of it and then slowly and carefully pulled it up and out of the sand. When pulling it out do it very slowly, if you pull to hard and too quickly you will end up breaking part of the razor off, it’s better to get the whole bait out, including the foot so go slow to keep it intact. This method of hand picking them may take longer but in my eyes it the best way of doing it and very fun, it also means little or no damage is done to the razor beds compared to if digging for them which we have never done in fear off doing this.

Thanks The mullet fishing was great crack down in Kerry, it was great getting a few early on in the year, it will still be a few weeks or so until we get fishing for them up here at home but you can be sure that when they do arrive we will be out after them. I am looking forward to it.

There is something for everyone whether your into rock fishing for Pollock or wrasse, conger fishing from piers, plugging for bass, or you want to go after the bigger sports fish such as Tope or Stingray. That’s why K2 and I travel down five times a year, we love the place
