Time: 5.45pm to 10.30pm
Tide: High at 6.30pm
Weather: Nice, bit cold later.
Bait: Mack and sandeel
Rigs: Three hook flappers, 6/0 pulley, 2 hook clipped down, fixed ledger
Results Me: lost count of the small coalies, 1 sea scorpion, 6 lsd, 1 codling
Fishy: 5 doggies, 2 codling and 17 coalies i think.

We hit the early and started fishing in brightness and picked up a load of small coalies. Hoping for something bigger after dark we decided to stay put. It started to get a bit busy up the back wall with tinsel tossers so we won't be fishing the mark again until next winter. We stayed put at the bottom of the pier and kept catching the coalies that were stripping the baits in seconds of hitting the bottom. I dropped a mack head down the side of the pier to see if there were conger about but something picked up the bait and snagged me, doggie i'd say as it didn't look or sound like a conger bite when the ratchet gave a few clicks. Fishy picked up a small codling about 30 yards out but i carried on dangling off the pier to see what i could pick up. I managed a sea scorpion and was still being plagued by coalies so i put on bigger baits and gave it a whack out. Doggies, doggies and more doggies was the result from there on so we headed off about half 10.

well good man evan.some nice species yet got.nice to get fish during the day too.i find in the winter that the daylight hours can be as productive as the night.roll on summer

great craic but even i was getting fedup off with the coalies thanks be to god the doggies came about allthough from your cursing i dont think you found it as entertaining as me sea scorpion a new one so a success overall!

Dunno about a success but the scorpion did put up a good scrap on the light rod. The rat race was a bit of a laugh too.

Cheers. Good to tot up the species count early in the year alright. Also nice to catch fish with the sun shining even if they were only small.

I might try another mark for them tonight. I'd say it shouldn't be much longer before they turn up. I've heard of the odd one popping up around cork but they're by catch when fishing for cod and the likes so the leaders are always bitten through so i haven't heard of one being landed yet. You'll see a report as soon as i find them anyway.

Hi evan, i vaguely remember ballycotton, i think if its the one near where we camped at crookhaven, about 20 years ago. I was touring with a trailer tent and family. I had salmon fishing gear with me, and me and the young son fished the rocks at the right hand side of the small beach at the campsite. It was july. We scraped a few limpits of the rocks for bait to give the sea fishing a go for a change instead of trout and salmon. Holy sh1t, when the tide came in at a fast rate it was pollack or wrasse every cast. Good sized fish at that. I was amazed how easy this sea fishing was . Not so bloody easy now lol. H ave you ever fished crookhaven mate?

Ballycotton isn't near crookhaven at all so i dunno where you were fishing but it sounds like a good spot. I know what ya mean about the sea fishing seeming easy at the start, running round the rocks with a spinning rod and a bucket of creatures you pulled out of rock pools and catching all around you. Then years on you can barely get onto the same rocks under the weight of all the gear you absolutely couldn't do without to do the same job. The burden of knowlege.

Oops thought i went through a ballycotton god knows, a long time ago. Crookhaven is in cork about as far south as possible, near mizen head i think. If your within range, the spot at the campsite is well worth a throw. The campsite/ caravan park is called barleycove.

I know barleycove well. Used to camp down there with my dad when we were kids till our camping spot ended up turning into the center of an illegal rave. Tends to happen down there during the summer. I'll be down around the beara fishing during the summer so i'll keep it in mind. Cheers.
