Good find but WTF??
"While the prohibiting of any lure other than artificial fly is probably the most contentious aspect of the new law John Paddy Burke has pointed to five other aspects of the new law that must be changed.
These include a section, which states the prohibiting of fishing, or attempting to fish, for bass, which John Paddy says, is also an “anti-tourism” measure."

What does this part of it mean?

it's a bullsh1t article, there are no changes to regulations. This article was printed in last week's paper, and was clarified this week. The minister signed an order increasing on-the-spot fines for those byelaw offences, and some eejit totally misinterpreted it and went to the paper. Nothing story...
Its called fishing, not catching. If it was called catching it wouldn't be fishing!

livebait banned?

#4 Post by Paul Harris »

Had an email today from a guy in the Uk who said he had heard that the Irish Govermant had banned the use of all live bait in Ireland.
Seems it was on some Irish angling website with comments from the trout boys around Corrib and Mask about dapping with mayfly, grasshoppers etc. It also said that worms were also banned which does have a few implications for us sea anglers. There was also something about bass fishing being banned in certain areas.
The law was passed it seems at the last minute but I cannot find any info on it.
Anyone heard anything or have people got their facts wrong, I know there is a live fish bait ban for pike fishing so is this where things might have got confused.

check out this link http://www.dcenr.gov.ie/NR/rdonlyres...No81od2001.pdf

bans just about everything including using crab as bait, lure fishing etc.

This is a joke of a law and has virtually banned coarse fishing, pike fishing, bass fishing.

Presume the Greens were behind this

I presume this is the link you meant to post
http://www.dcenr.gov.ie/NR/rdonlyres/90 ... od2001.pdf

IT DOES NOT BAN all those things you mention.

All it does is increase the fine where those things are forbidden.

thanks for that jd, sadly it is not reading like that and could have a serious effect on the tourist trade for some areas which rely on coarse and pike fishing.
Seems it was reported in a newspaper in the West and the story has grown legs.

My understanding is that there is nothing new here. Just an increase in on the spot fine for various offences.
EG: live baiting in fresh water has been banned with years. It has always been an offence to attempt to fish for bass during the closed season.

I've merged both threads - seems to be the same (non-)story.

Live baiting is banned in fresh water to prevent contaimination of lakes and rivers with non-native species. This is how many of the trout lakes have been over run with coarse fish due to pike anglers dumping non-native species ,usually from England , when here pike fishing.

That article was shockingly badly written, not hard to understand how people got wrong end of the stick.
