Re: List of Dangerous Fish in irish waters
Interesting reading on Blue Shark migrations from Ireland here.. not sure if they come back though!!ROADRUNNER wrote:The Blue shark is indeed a ferocious predator and has accounted for a lot of attacks on humans BUT ALL THESE ATTACKS have been in warm water (above 19c) when in our waters they are big pussy cats![]()
Another point to note... every year there is a shark comp in new york and they mostly catch Blues, The only thing is there average size which is 300/400lb ........ i wounder do any of them ever go for a Sunday drive over to our waters![]()

Re: List of Dangerous Fish in irish waters
to settle the argument about conger teeth
taken from http://www.britishcongerclub.org.uk/conger.htm
Conger eels have extremely sharp teeth and strong jaws.
Traces or leaders for Conger fishing should be wire or heavy duty monofilament of at least 300lb to avoid being bitten through. Even 300lb Mono will sometimes not be suffice.
Congers stay alive for long periods out of water and great caution should be exercised when unhooking the fish. Several anglers have lost fingers as they thought the fish was dead.

This year I caught one about 15lbs. Despite pulling it in from fairly shallow water just below my feet, the thing had all but bitten though my wire trace. My friend wanted it to smoke it, I didn't really want to kill it but eventually I agreed he could have it.
The conger was lying on the pier for about 40mins(neither one of us knew how to kill it). Then I caught a large pollock, seeing this my friend wanted that instead. So we threw the conger back into the water, it swam away as if it hadn't a care in the world:o

I think they should include Dragonets in this list, I have yet to meet a fish as evil as these, every single one I have ever caught has managed to stab and slice the bejaysus out of me

Fluff chucking is the new black..... Rampant Wreckfish is a fly angler in denial

Re: List of Dangerous Fish in irish waters
Quote from National Aquarium Galway.
Conger Eels have a reputation as fearsome beasts which will attack divers and swimmers, but in-fact this couldn’t be further from the truth. Apart from when it is feeding, the Conger Eel is a quiet, shy animal, and will swim away from a diver or swimmer rather than attack. It is a powerful, solid fish, with strong jaws and razor sharp teeth, but unless you are stupid enough to stick your finger in its mouth, it poses little danger.
