Pookie,
I normally start around the first spring tide in April if the weather is good.
Never catch much but its good to get out and try all that bloody tackle you've bought whilst dreaming over the winter :D
In saying that, I have always caught a stray couple of mackeral in April for the last three years!!
As I mostly lure fish for bass, I have become somewhat immune to the inevitable blanks - I'd say a hit ratio of 10% going up to say 50% in August/September.
Its good to get out though!!!!

i reckon not, tougher indeed with less results due to less fish around, cold seas and less daylight. The main fish you would be glashon (coalies) or maybe some Pollock if fishing off the rocks, over weedy ground. You'll have to go deep mind which could lead to tackle losses :? if you don't know the ground, but have caught myself up until November and beginnings of early march myself :) as glashon apparently spawn over the winter period or so a diver once told us. Still the devil makes work for idle hands and if your up for having a throw this time of year, go for it but I'll be hibernating till the spring when there's a bit of heat, everywhere!!

Am I the only one who feels that whatever 'rules' there might have been about what to fish and where and when to fish, seem to have gone out the window in the last couple of years?

I've been looking back over the flattie fishing the last few months, and the bulk and best stamp of fish appear to have come in dead calm water, bright sunshine and clear, slack water. It's been mostly a waste of time after dark with a swell running and the tide in flow. Not exactly what the textbooks say is it?

Right now the only 'think like a fish' thoughts I have left are avoid nets, stay in the water and beware the pan....
