1/1/11 Ballingwilling Co Cork

#1 Post by thescotsman »

Fished 1500 to 2230 joined after 1700 by Nik. HT about 1430 I think. Trying to get my species count for the year off to a good start (hoping for a repeat of a painted ray on same beach same day couple of years back).
Started quietly enough with a couple of flounder my daylight reward. Soon after Nik arrived I got into a small bass. After dark and as the tide raced down the beach I started hitting coalies quite regularly, while Nik was in amongst the cod at distance. He was trying hard for a bass closer in and opted for a big hook to avoid the coalies which he did apart from a couple of determined individuals.
Took me a while to get myself a cod but I did eventually. Tried to add to my species count, but the coalies were out in force and had to settle for a couple more cod and a few coalies to finish.
Have a mark in mind to bag a few more later this week. We only had razor and a mack, but the fish seemed happy enough with our limited bait. No doubt some crab would have increased our cod catch considerably.
2019 Species (8): Whiting, Coalfish, Dogfish, Bass, Coalfish, Dab, Lesser Spined Sea Scorpion, 5 Bearded Rockling
