Inside Cork Harbour 01/01/11

#1 Post by XmartyX »

People:Myself and the young lad

Duration:4pm to 8pm

Tide:HW at 3pm

Weather:Very Calm and around 6 degrees

Bait:Peeler and Razor

Rigs:2 Hook trace

Results:3 Coalies, 16 Codling & 1 Poor Cod

Report:Fished the slob bank in Youghal during the week and only managed a few coalie. Decided to get in one more trip before the dreaded return to work next week! Arrived at the mark at around 4pm, an hour after high water. First fish was a nice codling. After this we had three coalies before we hit a load of small codling. Managed to get three keepers for a change but returned all the rest. Also added a new species to my list - not sure though whether it is a poor cod or a pouting? (I’m almost sure it is a poor cod).

Very big fish get to be very big fish by eating very small things very carefully!

haha! here we go...
im going for a poor cod, if that wee Mini Species Guide is anything to go by.....! but its hard to tell 100% from the photo
Quote: "Pouting and Poorcod are often confused, the photo shows a pouting at
the top and a poorcod at the bottom, when they are side by side it is easy to spot
the differences. The anal fin of the pouting starts in a line half way below the
dorsal fin almost directly below the pectoral fin. The Poorcod's anal fin starts
in line with the back edge of the dorsal fin."

deffo a poor cod man. we've caught hundreds of them and hundreds of pouting and know just at a glance what they are straight away  :P . sadly all our codling catches of late would'nt even be big enough to fill a fish finger   . so fair play for getting a few worthy of the table :D
