Digging worms

Does anyone know where lug and rag can be dug in the Derry/Donegal area? I'm guessing Lough Foyle should be full of them but I never see anyone out digging for them and I wouldn't know where to start.

the western shore of the foyle and the shore of the swilly look to be full of lug casts over low water, guess its just a matter of finding an area with good numbers of casts and trying to dig them using a fork?

Usually it depends on how cold it is

In the winter the worms tend to be deeper... may take two fork depths to get them .In the summer normally they are within the first one

Terrible :)

Tried the beach on Inch.... in an hour managed to get 6 worms
Also tried inside the marina.... few big worm casts, could'nt find the worms though :(

Probably a stupid question, but then I'm good at them and afraid of hard work, too. Like digging.

Has anyone tried bog standard garden worms instead of lug and are they any use?

Any of the lug substitutes on sale that I've tried have been a dismal failure....

I've seen fellas from Belfast catching ballan wrasse at St. John's Point in Donegal Bay using ordinary garden worms on the float. Never used them myself right enough. Plus we were seriously outfishing them with wee hardbacked crabs.

Tried oul plastic, artificial rag myself (Powerbait or something, can't quite remember) anyway they were useless.

Used to dig lug during winter along the east side of the foyle, quite easy to get on a low tide. Around Ballykelly is ok but some of the locals don't like ya diggin their worms ! :shock:

Haven't dug any in couple yrs but should still be few around the east side of the foyle were the comps are normally held along the concrete wall, they're normally not far down in this area usually second spade.
Though a certain person (no names mentioned) tried his best to dig the place out of worms couple yrs ago! :evil:

Keep an eye on the tide if your out a good disatance from the shore. :!:

plenty of spots up the foyle, just look for the casts and try diggin, it may be harder digging this time of year though due to the colder weather.

You can normally get Rag on the shore just out past the bay field in Movile. The bay field is the football pitch down to your right hand side as you drive into movile from derry.
