raymonds from the rocks, donegal 29.12.10

#1 Post by last cast lad »

People:me, mark, mick,

Duration:12.00- 3.00pm

Tide:rising to top

Weather:mild southerly breeze

Bait:mackeral, bluey, squid

Rigs:pulley, flapper

Results:me; 3 Raymonds, 1 shortspined sea scorpian. mick; 2 Raymonds

Report: The snow's finally gone so took a quick run down to the rocks for a quick afternoon session with my brother mark home for holidays along with mick. Got set up for what in some ways was a quite quiet session :? but very rewarding non the less :D After about an hour of nothing not even bait robbing crabs I pulled in my 3.0 thornback pulley rig to find what I now believe to be a short spined sea scorpian :D :D a new species is always good, it pushed the measure to 20cm (although mick might try to suggest it was closer to 19  ) not sure if thats a good or bad sizr for these :?: This was then followed
by a 3lb thornie on my scratching rig, sometimes the fish just seem to make fools of us
I had another thornie and then back to nothingness for over another hour till we decided to pull the pin, mick pulled in his two rods to find a ray had been resting on the end of each  I then pulled in my pulley rig 3.0 rig with the tiniest little ray about 25 cm long not even hooked but hanging onto the bait.

nice looking fish, all really nicely coloured. not a bad wee 'quite quiet' session in my book..
still need to get my first raymond myself :) but i got a sea scorpion/bullhead in the summer - theres a photo of it in my gallery if you fancy takin a look. it was closer to 25cm - quite a big one i think.
cheers
Charlie

Just to answer, the scorpian fish coughed up the little red crab, although I would like to see how a thornie could mutat if there was some sort of nuclear spill, someone give homer a ring

great fishing lads :P you got more thornies in that one session than i got for all of 2010    . i think the stomach acids were working on that carb in the sea scorpions belly  . i got a cod last year just over a pound which i normally would'nt have thought of keeping. but the wee guy went belly up on the return so i foul hooked him to keep for a fish finger. when i gutted him i cut the stomach open to see what he had been eating and his belly was full of wee tiny brown crabs which had went that red colour in different stages of digestion
