rag worm

can anyone tell me, if i dig rag worm on tue morning to be used on wed nite, what is the best way of keeping them if i have no vermiculite (spelling?) or whatever it is they have in the shops. . . .are they still ok to use if i keep them in a bit of sand?

any advice is much appreciated

You can keep them in some wet sand on a tray.
In seaweed wrapped in paper.
Or just in a tray with a small drop of water which will keep them for weeks.

And leave them in a Fridge.

Vermiculite drys them out to much and could kill them after a week or so.

the rag are like mush at the moment they are spawning and no use as bait

i have a few in the fridge about 8 or 9 weeks and they are perfect

When your digging them and they are green dont use them, as Rodger says its spawning time

Personally I wont dig rag during the spawning season.
imo The bait beds need time to recover after a long summer of digging and disturbing the worms during the breading season is only going to lead to a decline in the overall worm population.
To answer your question I like to keep my rag in the fridge in trays with some water and if you change the water regularly they will last for alot longer than the few days your looking for .

Most of the lug spawn around the September equinox, there is normally a big reduction in the casts on the beach around then as over 50% will die off during spawning.

Most rags are spawning during the end of march andearly april and a second time two weeks or a bit more after that. Do not ever hold on to a green brittle ragworm in between the others,they're gone within a few hours.Green rag is good bait when you net them swimming on the surface during the dark,but they break off easely and most be used right away.Flounder,sole,bass,eels,dab,whiting,cod love them,because there are millions of them.

It's normally during the first few weeks of October here,so it would be a very similar time. All the blow lug spawn at the same time and on my local beach after spawning the lug turn orange and have absolutely no use as a bait and as previously said the beds are best left alone if you value you worm stocks. Lug can live for up to ten years if left alone and don't reach sexual maturity until their second year.

dont add any water just the play sand in a container in the fridge
