Surf Poppers?

#1 Post by Drew »

Just wondering if any of the Beach boys had used, or considered using Surf Poppers on their bait traces?

Reason I'm asking is on IFISH the other morning the lads were fishing baits for Aussie Salmon but also hitting fish on the Surf Poppers and Soft Platics on the way in...

Any Ideas on the topic?

you could try it but might not be worth the hassle up here as theres not normally much about big enough to take a popper!!!

They actually pretty small things the Aussies were using... Maybe work for a Rogue Bass or Sea Trout?

perhaps, the same thing may apply if you use a couple of beads(maybe floating beads) and a spinner blade above your baits?

Hi K2

I've had coalies take on the way in using beads & a small spinner blade as Phil mentioned just above the baits. Though i wouldn't be putting my hopes of gettin fish this way on a regular basis especially on our beaches

It might be worth a try if your on a beach were bass or seatrout are around

Have been to Oz a few times fishing and the Aussie Salmon, normally come around in shoals when i've seen guys getting them. You could expect a few hook ups in a very short time. Not to mention the other predatory fish hanging around in the surf, i've seen Tailor about 1lb taking poppers almost the same size as the bloomin fish!

Its not quite like going to Benone or the downhill knowing that 95% of the time its gonna be flatties your catching
The beaches down there throw up more than a few surprises..

See poppers below - may work for bass. I use the 5 inch swimmers for the smaller striped bass in the winter in the US - bend down the barbs and put a single hook on the tail end. Great prices - buy split rings and hooks seperately.

Hi k2, I saw that show this morning, I'd say it would be at least worth a try in summer, it means you always have something fishing which can't harm. While ledgering with sandeels and a few beads above it I caught a pollack on the retrieve, but only once.
I think I'll try the blade mentioned above and then the popper and see how it goes.
