Then think of all the small fish caught in nets and dumped dead over the side of most commercial boats because they are not big enough, benefiting only the seagulls!!

I personally think someone should do something about these gulls, a petition might work, i'd try anything once
After that, we can move onto to pesky anglers, catching fish and then (OMFG) keeping them to eat - bast%rds!!!
Then maybe we can vent our anger on the poor commercial fisherman, who does no harm, doesn't catch too many fish, does absolutely no harm to the sea bed with drag nets or by dredging , they dont use flat fish and dog fish as pot bait or illegally catch Bass ( this never happens ) and they do not dump their excess catch before coming ashore - i was obviously hallucinating when i saw this last year in Ballycotton- these poor souls who have never shot cormorants or seals for stealing their fish - again i was obviously hallucinating about the several times commercial skippers have gleefully recounted tales of such actions.

Up till about a 18 months ago a huge proportion of fish being sold in supermarkets in Munster was getting flown in from Iceland on a BlueBird Cargo Jet in huge containers. It was coming in through cork airport, collected by vans which were then distributing the fish as "locally caught". that flight then took off and headed up to Shannon airport where another few containers full of fish were off loaded and presumably sold again as "locally caught".
that flight now only lands in Shannon every evening (with 5-6 huge containers full, 5 nights a week), the cork vans must now go to all the ways up to Shannon, collect corks "locally caught" fish, bring it back to the depot, sort it out and then deliver it to dunnes, tescos or your local fishmonger.
would you rather eat a fish you caught 5 or 50 miles down the road, or would you rather eat a fish that was caught off the coast of Iceland, put in a truck and brought to a cold room somewhere near Keflavik, gutted, filleted by Icelandic workers, put in another truck and transported into a cargo jet, flown to Shannon airport by an Icelandic airline, collected from Shannon, and put into another van/truck, driven all the ways to Waterford or Cork or wherever you are, sorted out in another cold room, put in another truck and then, 3, 4 or even 5 days after the fish has been caught, delivered to your local shop and sold as "sure it was only caught a few miles off ballycotton" cod.
FFS lads, some people really need to grow up and stop begrudging a fella taking a few truly "locally caught" fish to feed his family. By buying that crap in the supermarket you’re feeding a few Icelandic families.

It annoys me more to look at some donkey posting up pictures on this website showing how many undersize fish hes caught and bragging about it than someone who has had a good nights fishing catching fish that are big enough to eat.
As for ya man moaning about how many boxes of fish the trawler he works on hasnt caught....jog on!

hello leec i wasnt moaning just stating the fact that 10 boxes of cod caught were caught in 5 days, we were south of the kinsale gas rigs for that so a long way from shore and i work on a seine netter not a trawler and last winter i see nearly 30 or 40 lads fishing every weekend in the youghal area catching bucket loads of 5 or 6 inch cod the majority that went back belly up this went on for months so its not all just down to me.cheers
fishing kills the odd fish...fact of life. If you don't like it then find another hobby or take up coarse fishing. I kinda feel sorry for the poor worms we kill in the thousands, most of which don't result in fish for the table

this is our country and our waters and the more we perserve it the better the fishing we'll have .look at the bass fishing ,its probably at its best,might even be better next year and thats down to a lot of hard work, same goes for the cod but if you all adopt the same attitude then it will wiped out and back to catching tiddlers next year.

great catch and i for one would have kept them all too, at the end of the day the man is eating the fish, and if he did'nt there would be a good chance they would end up in some trawlers net and u or me could be paying a fortune to eat them exact same fish so why should'nt he have the pleasure of eating them for nothing. I totally agree with catch and release and practice it 99% of the time but if i ever get a chance to practice catch and eat with fish of that quality no aamount of begrudgers would put me off fair play to u seanie and keep up the great fishing
well done on the catch and the begrudgers should cope them self on i would say that you put back 90% of the fish you catch during the year so keeping 10-20 fish a year is grand .

class fishing and a big well done! some lovely dinners for you and the family in the near future.. dont listen to the p.c brigade, there are always afew of them lurking and waiting to strike when they see afew fish brought home .. everyone has their opinion but as far as sea angling goes we go out to catch fish for sport, take some for the tea and return the vast majority of our catch.. wonder how much supermarkets throw in the bin daily that have went out of date and not sold.. scary! would love to have afew cod in the frezzer that iv caught myself but at the minute its icelands frozen finest so have to just keep trying l

so he kept a few good sized fish thats he's going to eat
its not as if he kills every fish he catches like some people do regardless of the fact most of them are under 6 inches (i find this more of a problem in coarse lakes as my local pike hole has been fished out by europeans, having chatted with them they refuse to believe that just because you can catch it doesnt mean you have to kill it)
besides im sure any one trawler would probably still have more fish kills than the entire sea angling ireland community together in any given year.
maybe we should go out and scupper a couple of trawlers.....create a few new wrecks and balance things out a bit. (only joking mr moderator)
