Well done, excellent catch. Personally, i think it unlikely that ALL the fish caught by shore anglers will damage codstocks. I rarely take any fish for the table, prefer a good steak myself, but i see no harm in what Sean did. Remember he didn't have to say how many he kept.

Then think of all the small fish caught in nets and dumped dead over the side of most commercial boats because they are not big enough, benefiting only the seagulls!!

Bloody seagulls, taking all those small fish, they should be ashamed
I personally think someone should do something about these gulls, a petition might work, i'd try anything once

After that, we can move onto to pesky anglers, catching fish and then (OMFG) keeping them to eat - bast%rds!!!

Then maybe we can vent our anger on the poor commercial fisherman, who does no harm, doesn't catch too many fish, does absolutely no harm to the sea bed with drag nets or by dredging , they dont use flat fish and dog fish as pot bait or illegally catch bass ( this never happens ) and they do not dump their excess catch before coming ashore - i was obviously hallucinating when i saw this last year in Ballycotton- these poor souls who have never shot cormorants or seals for stealing their fish - again i was obviously hallucinating about the several times commercial skippers have gleefully recounted tales of such actions.

Then people like you who go fishing DELIBERATELY TARGETING FISH
And finally those poor commercial fishermen who have never netted Youghal or Monkstown

I should have a long THINK!! about this.
I should also NOT congratulate someone for catching fish IN THE SHORE REPORTS SECTION ON A SEA ANGLING SITE.
Obvious when i think about it really

But one thing is for certain
THE NEXT TIME I SEE A SEA GULL, I AM GOING TO GIVE IT A PIECE OF MY MIND.

i really hope you dont get removed from this site after all its only discussion, and your right it is all wrong, and i am firmly in the wrong boat but so is every other guy/gal that has ever went fishing. From the moment we put a piece of bait on a hook we are in the wrong. just what is acceptable anymore not much. how can someone with a high conservation ethos even consider hooking a fish. someone slaughtered the bait you used to catch and release that plug you used to catch and release a fine bass was made in a chinese sweat shop. those 20 frozen sandeel came from the dwindling cornish sandeel population. the list goes on and on. HEADLINE NEWS ......100 LUGWORM AND 20 SANDEEL MURDERED
BY 9 WHITING AND 1 ANGLER BUT ALL RELEASED WITHOUT CHARGE and the angler went home thinking he was at 1 with nature

fair play to ya,, fantastic fishing trip,, and i dont think there is any angler out there {who eats cod} that would have put them back alive,,..... Into the freezer and keep the family fed and wife happy lol,, sure when we all go out on a charter boat fishing, we are all guilty of coming home with boxes of cod etc etc,,,, happy fishing!! id nearly make the 4 and half hour drive down myself to have a go hahaha....

The above post is an example of someone not willing to pay attention to the conversation going on around him and unwilling to compromise.

This is obviously a subject very important to k.c., and his opinion is valid.

However, as this is an exceptional session and not the norm (unless sean is a fishing god - he's not, i've seen him ), publicly asking to be removed from the site is a bit of an over reaction and just seems like you are looking for attention.

Yes, fish stocks are low, and a minimum size limit might be a good idea. However them main difference between cod and bass, is the fact that bass are a lot slower to grow than cod and do not grow nearly as big, also it takes longer for them to reach their sexual maturity (Average 6yrs or 42cm for females http://www.ukbass.com/seabassandfishery/breeding.html) , while Atlantic cod are sexually mature from an average of 2 years ( or an average of 32 - 41cm, the following link is a pdf http://www.nefsc.noaa.gov/publications/ ... /tm124.pdf )

So....
I guess most of the fish sean caught were sexually mature, may have reproduced and somehow contributed to the longevity of their species.
The time it takes for bass to mature sexually is one of the reasons for their size limit and the bass ban, these are also the reasons most people accept the size limit and the ban. Also the reasons commercial fishing for bass in Ireland is such a hot topic.

Taking any amount of cod home is a personal choice, and as long as they are consumed i have no problem with it.
Most of the people on this site will at some point take fish home for themselves or others, and as long as its is not an undersize bass or fish that are relatively small, i have no problem with that either.

But to use hysterical terms such as slaughter with regard to an extremely rare shore session, then becoming upset at the responses to your hysteria does your argument no good.

people also seem to have the view that my 10 or 20 fish wont have any effect on fish stocks and your dead right it wont but when you take ths time of the year when the cod are running and there could be up to 30 anglers out fishing 10 fish each turns into 300 and that by how many nights that the cod are running is as bad if not worse then the nets.i have seen it everytime a few cod going gangs out fishing taking bags full of cod home

this site has a lot of juv anglers and we all should be trying our best to guide them in the right way cos its for them we are trying to protect fish stocks.

i think juv anglers should be also made aware of the full picture as regards what effect trawling has had on their shore fishing and that its not wrong to take some fish home (not 18). by the time these juv anglers reach adulthood maybe it wont be acceptable at all to take fish home and should we as the current batch of adult anglers be clever enough to stop that slow boat coming up our river and maybe be stretching perimeters now of whats right and whats wrong.

very true, and theres nothing greener in todays envoirnment than a guy going down the coast and catching his dinner. if the trawlers were to be restricted properly theres not a fisherman in the land who wouldnt put back the majority of his catch

Fantastic fishing Seanie, well done, it took some determination to go out last week.

I'd chuck all them fine fish back, wait for a trawler to catch them, and then hand over my hard earned cash to Tescos to buy them back again for 15euro/kg for the dinner.

Well done Seanie, that was a fine session.
Keeping the fish is perfectably acceptable in my book. How many cod are caught by a single trawler in one day and how many of those are undersize and thrown back dead? Your 18 codling are a fairly minisule number in comparison to that.
Personally I would rather keep and eat the fish I catch than buy them and contribute to the profits of the commercial fishermen.

i work on a commercial boat we fished 5 days last week and all we had were 10 boxes of cod,fish that were between maybe 7 and 12 kilo all fully mature fish that owe nothing to the system probably 50 fish for the 5 days not much really.we will be lucky to get 3 euro a kilo.very little profit off that im afraid.all the cod seem to be up along the shore.and thats a fine nights fishing well done to you.you may catch them all now before we come along and scoop them all up in our big bad nets haha

think it was labelled as north atlantic big fillets aswell. just offhand thinking of middleman costs correct me if i am wrong is there an auction fee, transport from auction to shop or is it auction to distributor then to shop , storage ,wages and what looks like a very tidy profit. and also what would be considered a good days netting in terms of numbers or boxes of cod cheers
