Surely if everyone takes all decent sized fish like in this case then the chances of getting sessions like this again in the future will be getting less and less?

I voiced my concerns about another photo like this recently and it was removed by a Moderator but I am glad to see there are others on this forum with similar view points even if they don't get to have a say in case they offend some one The Politically Correct agenda we are developing in this country really has gone too far in my opinion

Nice session seanie.... i see there are still the odd one trying to knock everyone else on there fishing.... like other anglers nothing wrong with stocking the freezer up.. it better than buying that sh**e from the shops that is full of just water in the fillets...... if some people had there way no one would be aloud to fish this country....... only the chosen ones can........... I HOPE YOU HAVE A BIG FREZZER IF NOT GO AND BUY ANOTHER ONE MAN.........

after all the negative comments i took a second look at your report what no one mentioned was fair balls to you for letting us in on your great catch that you froze your hide off on a cold miserable night and then had the generosity to point other anglers in the right direction for a bit of sport ,and a fillet or three go and spout to your local td about the commercials if you care about cod not one angler who hit the jackpot cos he wasnt a nancy sitting at home moaning about the weather

cheers for all comments lads everybody has an angle, i will be fishing in youghal for the next few months once or twice a week probably wont keep a fish till the freezers empty so it will balance out in the end not at all saying "kill em all" just that when theres exceptional numbers of fish in front of you (which dosnt happen to often) why not reap the harvest a bit because you can be damn sure every other stake holder in our waters from trawlermen, politicans and business organisations will be reaping theirs and i could gaurantee you all that if a netsmen pulled up a net with 18 codling under 5lb in it that would be considered a poor day at the office

Cracking session that. Pics like that do make me a little uncomfortable, but it's the pics rather than the taking of them, oh, and that I've not had a catch like that for far too long.

There's nothing wrong with taking a bunch of them when you can, you don't often get sessions like that so there's nothing wrong with making the most of it while they're there. I'm sure you'll make full use of them and codling like that give a perfect sized fillet.

Next time I'd shy away from taking a pic of all of them and just show a couple, it'll stop people complaining and if any doubts the numbers it's them with the problem and not you. Well done, if it wasn't a 5-6hr drive from up here I'd have down that way a few weeks ago, some cracking fishing right now.

Just out of interest, did you get a bunch of tiny codling last year? If so next year could be interesting for you. On the East Anglian and South East coast of the England they got loads of codlets a few years ago, the year before last a good number of 2-4lbers (the size you've got there), last year a reasonable number of 6-10lbers and this year a far reduced number of fish but some of them proper lumps over 20lb. Numbers will always be reduced as they get bigger, due to all manner of reasons, but next year could throw up some good low doubles if it goes the way it did over there. Just to get you all excited!

yes lots of small cod last year in the 1lb-2lb bracket as you say in a year or 2 there will be some lunkers out there

hopefully your right, last winter i was getting loads of tiny codling the size of pin whiting, this year we'v been getting a few half decent ones so if we got a odd four or five pounder next year it would be great for up here. great session by the way.

hi k.c. i can see exactly what your point is but the reality of the scenario of "no fish in the sea or no bites" will not be caused by my haul of cod the other night but by the big wheels in the fishing industry. Thing is i have had a good THINK!!!!!! about it. we all as rod fishermen are being slowly morphed/groomed into p.c conservationists whereas in future years if you tickle a trout it might raise a few eyebrows, the day is already here were a guy goes fishing and keeps a few (not me i kept 18) that he could in theory be slated by fellow anglers. how did we end up in this state. Upcoming future battles with an1mal r1ghts activ1sts on cruelty will be lost on our side because catch and release is flawed . Imagine if the foxhunters in the UK whilst trying to stop a ban on foxhunting had said ok guys from now on we are just going to drag a fox around a field by the mouth then let it go isnt that great Pet@. And all the while each and every day the trawlers head out filling there nets ,i often wonder do trawler skippers raise there eyebrows at each other over bumper catchs in the tons. they must piss themselves laughing reading threads like this. however i do feel that conservation is the way forward and catch and release is the best means of that but it is utterly useless if its just the humble joe soap with his fishing rod who practises it which is the case at the moment. how long now have the majority of sea anglers been trying to lead by example yet the fishing industry continues to harvest the sea of enormous amounts of fish that leads to a rod fishermans predicement of returning his often meagre catch to the sea then chucks off to the supermarket to buy some fresh fish that helps fund the whole cycle. now i aint saying if you cant beat them join them, just that in the very rare circumstance of having a large number of fish in front of you why not pluck the cherry off the top of the cake and stick it in your gob. anyways my beef is with the duke of devonshire because he owns the seabed where i caught the fish and as he hasnt responded on this thread so it must be ok but thats another days talk

shame on you sean taking all those codling in the present climate when we as a country are in total s.ite every and any
means in which you can put food on the table is welcome how
many times have you been out and the fishing is terrible ,i for one
can tell you i have being out twice this week and all i had to show
for my troubles was i undersize dab well i can tell if i had
fishing like that i would have done the EXACTLY what sean did

First and foremost well done Seanie, a great nights fishing. I think its up to individuals as to whats to many fish too bring home. I recently brought home 6 codling and that did six dinners for me and my son, his first taste of fish In reality you and your family will get about six dinners out of what you caught, so well done in this day and age its not easy putting food on the table, and you cant get better tasting and a more healthy food than prime codling fillets.

hi dick bhoy32/john off this site should be able to look after you they are becoming scarce though so order early if you can i would suggest or try cortaz off the site aswell,




just a few points lads you shouldnt have to be in "economic tough times" to be keeping your catch once its within the boundarys of the law. maybe we should be increasing the amount of fish that we see as an acceptable bag before it becomes unnacceptable to even hook a fish because slowly but surely thats whats happening. also not many people aired there views going against the majority of replys on this thread for those who did fair play sure its only discussion and welcome all views

well lads as i already said im not against keeping a few fish for the tea as ye said a lot cheaper then buying and a hell of a lot fresher too .
but i have been fishing for over 20 years and have seen a big change in the years i have been fishing in concervation pratices keeping fewer and leaving off more and its not cos people dont want the fish any more its cos the dropping fish stock made us do it.
people say angling dont have an affect on fishing but all you have to do is go back to a time when all fish were recorded at the end of competitions before catch and relese and look at the damage that did to some of our best flounder marks only slowly comming back now.
people also seem to have the view that my 10 or 20 fish wont have any effect on fish stocks and your dead right it wont but when you take ths time of the year when the cod are running and there could be up to 30 anglers out fishing 10 fish each turns into 300 and that by how many nights that the cod are running is as bad if not worse then the nets.i have seen it everytime a few cod going gangs out fishing taking bags full of cod home.
as for the antis if they see pics like this its only giving them ammo ok there not many of them out there but to us that pic is a bag of good fish to them its a horror story.
fair enough sean you are concervation minded and will relesse fish most time you go out ,this post is for the people that are like mackerel bashers and turn up a few weeks a year to take take take.

this site has a lot of juv anglers and we all should be trying our best to guide them in the right way cos its for them we are trying to protect fish stocks.
at the end of the day look were greed got this country today and its greed and lack of propper management that has fish stocks so low

seanie your a quite level headed man.to put up a post for people to enjoy and read and then to get the good taken out of it.what you do with the fish you catch is up to you.give the man a brake.i think if i got some of that feed back i would be very slow to post again and that would result in less good reports for everyone to read.

just to say i have been reading seanies threads for a while now,and he has always,in my opinion, been a conservation minded angler,he even sold me a great reel the point i was trying to make,is we go on about bass all the time,rightly so,and i know that cod grow quicker and breed like rabbits,but we have seen a dearth of cod over the last ten years,and have had our say about it,blaming the trawlers/commericals for there collapse,and now we are seeing a recovery of sorts,its great to see some good cod fishing of the beaches again and i have NO problems bringing a few fish home for the dinner,god forbid after the budget it might be the way foward!but lets remember that it will not take too much to decimate those stocks again! sorry again for ruining this thread seanie,and brian, of course i __ jelous!! i can feel a cork trip coming on!

how come no-one objects to people catching 100's of mackeral every summer and filling their freezers for bait? I've no objections to seeing a good haul of fish besides I'm sure these fish suffered very little compared to the (Mod Edit)trawlermen who are responsible for the fish stocks being what they are today.

good fishing mate. best cod i've had off the shore this year is about 6oz so fair play to you.
