Report: Last week Patk had been wondering if all the decent size codling had been trawled after a poor session. However, I told him that I was still getting plenty of good ones so we arranged to meet up for a session at one of my cod marks on Tuesday evening.

I arrived shortly before Pat, and had the first rod cast out before he got there. It was still too early in the tide to expect much from this mark. As the tide began to push in I had the first bite, a small codling of less than a pound. This was followed by another three small ones over the next half an hour. Then the first of the bigger fish showed up. After that it was non-stop action, we were getting fish on every cast, most above the two pound mark and several in excess of three pounds. Initially Pat had been using frozen crab whereas I had fresh peelers so I seemed to be catching more fish but once the bigger ones appeared Pat switched to fresh crab too and he was reeling then in one after another in quick succession and soon caught up with me.

Pat was using a single rod but I had two, and no sooner would I have cast out the first when there would be a bite on the other rod. At one stage I was reeling in a good size fish when my line snapped. I spent the next half an hour trying to put on a new shockleader but every time I started there would be a bite on the other rod. After about the third attempt I had yet another knock on the other rod, I began to retrieve, the fish felt to be a good size codling, then when I landed it I realized that I had snagged the shockleader that I lost earlier and the fish was actually on the end of this and not on the end of the line that I was retrieving. It was a good fish too, about 3 lb.

Before heading out that night I had wrapped up well expecting to be freezing in the Artic conditions but with all the action I was actually too warm and had to remove a layer of clothing. In fact most of the time I did not even have my coat zipped up.

Close to 11 pm the bites were slowing down, and I had used the last of my crab. Pat got snagged and lost a rig so we decided to pack up. I brought some of my gear back to the car while leaving the rods out for one last cast when I returned there was definitely a good fish on the end of one of them as the rod tip was bounding around. As I retrieved it was pulling strongly and turned out to be my biggest codling of the session, just under 4 lb, probably about 3.75 lb. There was also a small codling on the other line.

So it turned out to be a great session, and as Patk said it was the best night's cod fishing he ever had. It was a fitting end to a great month's fishing. I had 97 codling in November, the majority above 2 lbs and many 3 lb or greater.

I was looking forward to reading this report after you told me the other day about the session you guy's had Frank. Well done the pair of you, that is just simply brilliant fishing. I am sure Patk was well made up at getting into the action with you It sounds like you's were kept busy which is a good way of keeping warm in these freezing conditions we are experiencing at the minute. 36 cod between you's in just over 3 hours is a fantastic result.
Frank, you must be going through some amount of crab at the minute, although as long as you keep on catching the way you are I am sure your not that bothered about how much you are using.

Great fishing Hunter, been hoping to get down there some day soon, but it is not worth it in these conditions, might never get home again. Well done lads and keep them coming, some very nice plump cod there.

well done lads some fishing more of the same the following nite they were like mackeral, rod got pulled off the stand twice lost countless fish when i was filleting them 5 contained small rockling freezer stocked up good , still waiting for a BIG cod though

Great report lads,and nice to see the cod/codling around and cracking photo's
but i would like to say that from the photo's most of these cod/codling were
for the dinner plate,i just hope in the future we can take 1 or maybe even 2 home
to allow for the stocks to grow and multiply,so in the future we can take maybe
just the 1 fish of maybe 8-10lbs leaving the younger ones to spawn for a few
years,as you all know we have enough pressure from netting,and it is a more
of a pleasure to catch a cod/bass/ on a hook than in a net!!!!!

Anyway no offence to anyone just thinking of future stocks,like our children and
theirs and so on, cause there is nothing better that catching a wild fish!!!!!

Thanks to John (Bhoy32) for the crab supplies - although with the cold weather they are getting scarce (or maybe all the cod that are about are devouring them!!)

You would just have to stay fishing down here until we have a thaw (next March the way it is looking at the moment).

I just stick a full peeler on a large hook and lob it out, the fish do the rest.

but i would like to say that from the photo's most of these cod/codling were

I kept about half of the fish I caught that night, anything over 2 lb or any that were too deeply hooked to survive. That's our dinners sorted for the next week.

You will have to make another visit down this way before Seanie and myself catch them all

If the trawlers left them alone for a while then you might eventually start to get a few good size fish.
