Report:got to the mark i intended to fish to be greeted by the coldest wind i have ever experienced got the peeler off john how he picked tyres in that wind i will never know thanks again. found a spot where i could get some shelter from the wind. from first cast till last it was cod cod and some more cod. rod pulled off tripod twice dropped loads lifting them out of the water and returned at least 8 smaller fish and kept 18 good fish. best fish was about 4.5lb 52cm. i can only describe the fishing as similar to mackeral fishing and i have no doubt of the numbers of codling out there. Of these keepers they will be enjoyed over the coming month by me and my family in a variety of tastey ways

seanie thats a great nights fishing,now,ive never done this before,but that picture made feel uncomfortable,we have been praying for a cod recovery for the past few years,and now that they are finally on the way back,mabye we need to be a bit more conservation minded and give the fish a chance to recover more,nothing wrong with a few fish for the table,but,if the fish are that catchable in cork,then mabye just bring a few home and let the rest back.sorry again to do this to your thread.best of luck with your fishing!

no worries noel, i think it has the makings of a good discussion. I would rate myself as fairly conservation minded and put back a hell of a lot of fish but the scenario is arising that me and my family are fond of fish dinners and its dawning on me that if i release all the fishies i catch my wife will go ahead and spend $$$$ on fish products from the supermarkets ie fishfingers....fillets in batter....salmon that fund fish farming...trawling and the like. chances are most cod i catch in the next month will be put back probably to be netted or caught by another fisherman or amazingly survive to lead a productive life. I also think the cod is sitting pretty just under Bass as a species that alot of fisherman will cry foul when they see a photo like the one above yet no one blinks twice at pictures of multiple macks,coalies, pollack ,flounder etc and by fishermen who just happen to use sandeels, crab, prawns,worms fish as bait that could be equally endangered or worse juvenile.

well done seanie.ur dead rite to stock up ur freezer.the fish look all fine to me to get good fillets off.dont worry bout wat any1 eles say.if i was takin a pic of that id be very happy.as said u have loads now and ur next catches will prob be releases.there is no limit on cod as u know so keep as many u want if the size is rite.alot of very jealous ppl on here.times r tough these days.i wish u the same luck on ur next session

absolutely no greed here and in my opinion no conservation issue please anglers don't fall into the trap of political OVER correctness. theres enough 'antis' out there without slating each other from within.

Cracking session that. Pics like that do make me a little uncomfortable, but it's the pics rather than the taking of them, oh, and that I've not had a catch like that for far too long.

There's nothing wrong with taking a bunch of them when you can, you don't often get sessions like that so there's nothing wrong with making the most of it while they're there. I'm sure you'll make full use of them and codling like that give a perfect sized fillet.

Next time I'd shy away from taking a pic of all of them and just show a couple, it'll stop people complaining and if any doubts the numbers it's them with the problem and not you. Well done, if it wasn't a 5-6hr drive from up here I'd have down that way a few weeks ago, some cracking fishing right now.

Just out of interest, did you get a bunch of tiny codling last year? If so next year could be interesting for you. On the East Anglian and South East coast of the England they got loads of codlets a few years ago, the year before last a good number of 2-4lbers (the size you've got there), last year a reasonable number of 6-10lbers and this year a far reduced number of fish but some of them proper lumps over 20lb. Numbers will always be reduced as they get bigger, due to all manner of reasons, but next year could throw up some good low doubles if it goes the way it did over there. Just to get you all excited!

Great fishing Seanie , Waterford is having some good cod fishing too . I found myself throwing back a few on the smaller side last wk only to see them float away on the surface dead or dying , so I'm keeping them all now . My friends and family are delighted with all the free cod fillets

but i have to agree with some of the lads a 18 is a bit much even though nothing wrong with a few for the table,not anti anything but when us as anglers give out about the pressure of commercial fishing on the cod stocks we should be showing some concervation our selfs.
personally i think the laws are all wrong in this country like bass there should be size limits for all fish not just bass as well a bag limits.
as you said no one says anything about people taking 100s mackerel but that dont mean its right.
fish stocks are dwindling and conservation is the only way forward if we want fishing in the future.

i have to say its great to have a good run of cod this year , great to be getting sizable fish for a change.

well done seany nice one no one angler is going to decimate cod stocks all the anglers together would not decimate cod stocks ive had plenty of pics like the one above since august but would not stick them up for fear of the upset it would cause those fish are going to be used to feed the mans family ffs he is well within his rights to take them well done again sean

Nice fishing Seanie,was out wednesday night myself got around 10 cod in three hours, fishing was very good that evening .Out this morning not a bite thats fishing for ya.That northerly wind on wenesday was realy realy cold but when fishing's so good you bearely feel it .

Well done, nice session.
I'd have no problem with someone keeping ANY amount of fish as long as they were going to eat them.
They are all decent enough size to get some nice fillets off them and you can bet sean put back a good few smaller fish.
I am only guessing here, but i think all of the fish pictured would be over the commercial size limit, and IFSA size limit as well.

These are not small fish and you dont get too many sessions like this, so enjoy
