Weather: Light northeasterly breeze, overcast
Bait: Lures
Rigs:
Results: 2 pollock, 1 bass
Report: As the weather had been calm for several days I headed out for a quick lure session. I tried a new location, one that I had intended to fish this year but never got around to it due to a sore foot all summer.
The tide was still very low when I got there, but that gave me the opportunity to check out the various gulleys and overhangs where bass are likely to hang out. As the water was shallow I fished surface lures, mostly various patchinkos. Close to dusk the pollock began to come in close - I had numerous pollock try to grab the lure but most missed apart from one small fish. As the light was going I was fishing into a gulley and something made several attempts at the patchinko close in - I presumed it was just another pollock. Then suddenly there was a big splash and the fish was hooked - it was obvious that this was something more substantial than the small pollock that had been after my lure earlier. It was putting up a good fight and tried to pull to the right to get in amongst the rocks. I eventually got it in close and onto the rock platform. It was a well fed 48 cm bass
As the tide was rising I had to move back so couldn't continue fishing into the same gulley. I moved along the shore and tried several likely looking spots. However, it was dark at this stage and I didn't get any more bites apart from another small pollock, again taken on a patchinko.
It's definitely a mark I will return to - but I reckon it will fish better higher in the tide, ideally with dusk about two hours before high tide.
