East Cork Beach 101010

#1 Post by Ronnach »

People: me

Duration: 2.30 to 6pm

Tide: Rising

Weather: Easterly breeze, overcast, wind dropped and became muggy later

Bait: Rag

Rigs: 2 hook flapper

Results: 1 Bass

After a couple of blanks in the last 2 weeks I was hopeful today with the spring tides and the weather seemed decent - overcast and a good surf coming in on the beach. When I arrived the tide was fully out, it was nice to see so much sand exposed on the beach as I had only ever been there before within a few hours of high tide when there is a much smaller area accessible.

Fished for the first few hours without much action, apart from a few small bites that I kept missing. A few times after taking in the rig I found just half a rag remaining, probably some clever flounder making off with a snack. There was so much surf I doubt if the crabs were around.

Close to the time when I was about to pack up I finally got a good few sharp knocks on the rod, lifted into it and started retrieving. I could feel a decent weight of a fish and could see the line tearing off to the right and in towards the shore - seemed like a bass :) Sure enough when I landed it turned out to be a lovely 48cm bass, not the heaviest at around 3lb but he put up a good fight. It was going to start getting dark about an hour later and could have been a very good night for them, but I had to head away so didn't manage any more.

Unfortunately the bass was deep hooked and I enlisted the help of another fisherman and forceps to take out the hook, but it looked like he wasn't going to make it, so this one was kept for the pot.

That's a lovely bass, well done. You quickly forget about the days when you have blanked when you catch a fish like that, it makes it all worth while in the end heading out and giving it another go and not giving up 8)
