A east Cork Venue - 10/10/10 - COD
People: myself
Duration:6:30 - 9 pm
Tide:Big- 8pm FT
Weather: Calm and warm
Bait:crab
Rigs:Pennells (2/0 & 3/0) Pennell pulleys 2/0
Results: 9 coddling, 1 cod, 1 dog and 2 coalies
Report: Sometimes the gods smile on you and manage a session that is not a dream.
I hadn't planned to fish this weekend but fate intervened and I got some crab and went for a quick session in the hope of bagging some half decent coddling. Times and tide were perfect when I got to the venue. Not much happening until darkness but I picked up a couple of decent coalies ~35cm before it got dark and a small codling 1lb just at dusk. As the sun went down and the tide filled on came the coddling. A nice 2lber at first followed by a doggie, then a double on a pennel trace, then one at 3lb and another at ~2lb and just at full tide I had my first proper cod. The bite was not great but once I connected with him he stayed deep and tried to move against the tide and weed like he was on a mission. I kept the pressure up, but the slipped my gears on my Penn mag before I finally managed to beach the mother. I was happy as a pig in S**T, afters years of frustration I finally managed a cod (ie over 5lb) from the shore. I had 3 more up until 9pm when I called it a day as I was out of peelers. I have included some pics, unfortunately they all did not come out and some don't do the fish justice but I don't care I can finally tick the box regards cod. Its been about 10 years since I had a coddling session of that quality and I hope its not a flash in the pan, but this winter could be serious. My penn mag needs urgent repair but so what it was worth it.

Well done - good to see a proper cod from the shore.
I was fishing an East Cork beach myself on Sunday night - aiming for bass as there was a great surf but got 8 codling, all a decent size too
along with one fairly large coalfish.
It was from a beach which is more known for bass than cod (at least in recent years) so it looks like we could be in for a bumper cod season alright.
