Got the boat out at last this afternoon after a number of problems and delays: The man who said that ‘a boat is a big hole you threw money into’ was damned right. While the fishing rods were aboard the main idea of the day was to get used to the boat again (2 years since I was out in it) and to run the newly serviced engine in. We would fish if we got the chance.
While sitting at the pier loading the gear we noticed hundreds of sand eels/sprats in the water and some were actually running up the slip and stranding themselves. Not wanting to miss a chance I dropped the string of lures over the side and in seconds had four joey mackerel on – only the size of sprats ‘Bait!’. We took a dozen in total before heading off.
We went out around Kinvara Bay and then out towards Island Eddy heading into the South Bay. There was a Mayday call over the radio as a 19’ fishing boat had hit rocks off of Furbo and was taking on water. This brought home how dangerous the sea can be. Before we cleared Island Eddy the three men on board had been picked up and were safe.
Once clear of Island Eddy the sea proved to be locally rough due to winds blowing down off the Burren and we decided to turn back. Once in behind the island again the sea was relatively calm and we decided to fish.
Dropping the lures over the side in 30’ of water we hit mackerel immediately – three and four at a time and then full houses. We filled the box shown in the picture and decided to change tactics and bottom fish a couple of joeys. But the weather turned against us as rain poured down and the wind picked up. Deciding we’d done what we set out to do we headed back to the mooring.
Filleting mackerel at the moment and looking forward to a good supper.
All the way back in the fish finder showed shoals of fish so inner Galway Bay is alive with them at the moment. My plan is to get out a few times over the next few weeks.

Fair play to you for getting out in not ideal conditions. No major problems, and you have a nice bit of bait laid in now.... result

Thanks for the comments lads, it is good to be able to get out. Tides are not great at the moment - I was down there this morning and the harbour was empty of water and this will happen until Sunday - all the boats were sitting on the mud. The start of next week looks promising weatherwise so I'll keep in touch.
