Antrim Coast - Friday, 6th August

#1 Post by damienmc »

I'll start this report in the usual 'somewhere on the Irish coast' fashion but, if you pay careful attention to the photographs, you might just be able to work out the location. :)

I decided to fish a mark I'd last been to roughly 25 years ago in my teens and believe me it was a lot easier to get to back then!! Time has taken its toll on my knees. Having spent 10 mins or so getting 25 yards from the road to the water's edge (without disappearing down one of a multitude of holes) I cast out the bait rod and starting spinning with the other. Half way into a retrieve on the spinning rod I got a massive knock on the beachcaster but, by the time I picked up, it was well and truly snagged ..... I lost fish, trace and leader. After rigging up for the second time the same thing happened again although this time I only lost a single hook. I have no idea what type of fish wrecked me but, given the rough ground, I imagine it was probably a wrasse or pollack .... but who knows(???). At this point I moved to the nearby beach and fished for a couple of hours catching a two small flounders close in (20-30 yards). Before going home I went back to the rock mark (thanks to George for the advice on the 'easy' way across) and fished with a float for an hour catching two smallish pollack.

If anyone has the patience and perseverance to bottom fish the rock mark I reckon they could be in with a chance of a few good fish. I do remember decent plaice being caught here so there must be some clean ground.

Work and weather permitting I'm planning to post a few more reports over the next few weeks. :)

Duration: 15:30 to 20:30

Weather: dry and light wind

Bait: rag & mackerel

Results: 2 flounder & 2 pollack

Like fishing here myself,it's easy to get at and theres hot food and toilets near by of course :) Police station local also should you fancy a comfy bed for the night

Fished it a couple of times last month and it was just getting more productive, especially later on in the day towards 9pm.

you are a braver man than me! I have fancied having a go from those boulders a couple of times and the furthest that I have got is the first block over the wall........then I looked down and that was it, sod the fish

must admit I do enjoy fishing the beach and have found an incoming tide in the dark the most productive with a gentle lob 25-30yrds producing fish.

on eof my favorite spots to fish, just off the breakwater. i fish here at least once per week and have to admit its getting better - especially in the evening. On thursday 5th of this month i had my biggest wrass ever, just over 3lb on the float and rag.
very productive spot for all methods and definately worth the hassel of climbing down - travel light and keer yer hands free though!!

well done

Looks like a nice location, nothing a rotten bottom and fine wire hooks wouldn't resolve.

nice one man, that wee beach can fish well on it's day. also a handy spot when all the other beaches out that way are unfishable due to bad weather. always seems to afford a bit of shelter there :)
