the smoothie session

#1 Post by doggie3131 »

we had being thinking about planning a smoothie session for a while,so when we got the phone call from conor,we were up for a road trip 8) three and a half hours later we were on the beach, conor, peter, and peters brother ray, were already set up.with fifty euros of quality bait with us  we were set up in record time.there was a shoal of schoolie bass in front of us but no matter what anyone chucked at them they refused to play. :( things were quiet for the first hour with only a small flounder for me,and a dab for peter, but then two lads up the beach had a smoothie and the blood started pumping again, john then got what he thought was a doggie bite and reeled in to find a smoothie pup on the end,he was made up!!new species for him then! :D then peter got one,a pup that is,and i was the only one on the beach not having caught one before, and the slagging started! :( a few doggies were caught over the next few hours and conor was getting worried with the doggies showing, when john and conor both got good bites, nothing landed but it was a good sign. Then finally i got a funny bite,i started to reel in "bloody doggie" i thought, then it hit the wave line and went mental, finally, i had broken my smoothie verginity with a nice one about four and a half lb! 8) (conors guesstimate) i was well pleased!john was not! :D the slagging started!conor, not to be outdone, then decided to get two at the same time!he decided to weigh the biggest, which came in at five lb six ozs! 8) that was fun! he had another, then john gota good bite and landed a nice smoothie which clocked in at five lb exactly!and about four pm the boys decided to pack up,we were on a all nighter so we fished on,with another smoothie each, some whiting,a sandeel and a tub gurnard for me,another new species for me this year! 8) It was a cracking night out, with the target species, some nice smoothies beached.time to go home!

North Wexford 5th 6th 7th August 2010

#9 Post by saltydog »

Sorry Noel I must've been writing this up while you were posting so I merged the two together ;)

People: mga, doggie3131, goldwing, JAKES & his brother Val and myself

Duration: lot of hours put in

Tide: all stages

Weather: mostly dry wind mostly SW F2/3

Bait: Peelers fresh and frozen, rag, lug, mackerel, sandeel, squid

Rigs: various

Results: Smooth Hounds, Dogs, Tub Gurnards, Thornback Ray, Dabs, Flounders, Plaice, Whiting, Codling, Sandeel

Report: Was heading over to Wexford for a few days so had organised to get a few of the lads over to try for smuts. Things were a lot slower than my last visit with the slack tides and the drop in atmospheric pressure not on our side. We persevered and everyone got a smut in the end:

Thurs 18:00-04:30
mga and myself set up on a North Wexford beach that's been good to me and has been producing decent smuts.... things were very slow with me getting the first hound as the light went tipped the scales at 4lbs 11ozs thought we'd get a run of them but not to be next fish was a considerable time later... another smut to me a wee pup.... again the clock ticked by when a slightly better hound fell to my crab bait weighing in at 5lbs 2ozs... mga got off the mark and the target species acquired with a pup smut and followed that up with a lovely 35cm codling... while I landed the best smut of the night weighing in at 6lbs 1oz we fished on till the light was just starting to threaten to confuse our body clocks and skulked back to base.... not the rod bender mga was hoping for but there was always tomorrows session.

Fri 14:00-17:00
We had some lug ready for an afternoon session of flats and hopefully some Bass. We stayed up around North Wexford and hit one of my favourite marks for species. I was hitting fish straight away with flounders coming regularly, a small plaice a tub gurnard pup smut double.... mga was having no luck fishing no more than 12 yards apart same baits etc he saved the blank with a flounder on the last cast

Fri 20:00-03:30
We collected some more crab and a few bits and pieces of the lads in Courtown Angling Centre and headed off to try a different North Wexford beach we arrived to see a few lads fishing a little bit up the beach. We set up and cast out in anticipation a early dog for myself then nothing for quite some time following a similar pattern to last night.... then I got a good strong bite and reeled in a nice little Thornie was happy to see him, next up was a pup smut and a nice dab at distance for myself followed by a hound of 4lbs 13ozs and a dog towards the end.... we stayed on late waiting for a a pack to show up but they never arrived we packed up with mga having no luck on the night

Sat 17:30 - 03:30
JAKES and his brother Val were due over for the night to try for smuts they arrived armed with 3 dozen fresh crab... doggie3131 and goldwing were also on the road over from Mayo for the session... we arrived to find two setup and fishing while another few lads had gone for a walk up to another beach with Bass no doubt their quarry. Myself JAKES and Val were set up when doggie3131 and goldwing arrived and I had just spotted a shoal of schoolie Bass about 10yards out herding sandeel or sprat it was some sight with the polaroids on you could actually make them out rising to the surface every min or two they stayed in front of us for a good 30mins further out there were sea trout jumping from 40yards to a few hundred some sight.... back to the fishing I'd just gone over and was chatting to the two lads who were fishing at the end of the beach when one of them had a bite fish on and the first smut of the evening was on the beach a nice 5lb or so fish.... this got everyone's attention and we sent fresh baits out waiting for the rods to go like dominoes but alas nothing doing doggie3131 got a flounder to start proceedings then changed and stuck with two crab baits for smuts....Val got a couple of pup smuts then doggie3131 had a pup as did JAKES... I'd a couple of dogs and doggie3131 got the first decent smut of our group at 4lbs plus can't recall the exact weight.... JAKES had a dog or two but the hounds weren't playing ball for us.... the two lads that were fishing along side us packed up and JAKES and Val moved down the beach a little to where the two lads had been fishing which is a a bit of a hot spot with JAKES getting a fine dab at distance... things were going very poorly with no packs showing JAKES had come down to me at 02:30 and said we'll give it 30mins if nothing is happening we'll pack up I was chatting to doggie3131 when goldwings rod kicked and register a classic smut bite no mistaking it... in came a 5lb smut that had gone down the beach a bit... so fresh baits sent out to the horizon there must be a pack in at last we were thinking... the 30mins had passed when doggie3131 and myself were standing at my rods when bang smut on i was reeling in and doggie3131 said you've crossed yourself got the fish in when doggie3131 said you've one on your other rod after a decent fight in came a 2nd smut slightly bigger than the 1st one at 5lbs 6ozs I walked down to JAKES and Val to show them the fish and let them know there was a pack in but they'd just broken down their gear.... we waited for another bit i'd one rod set up and JAKES was on it if the smuts came back for another pass... doggie3131 got hit JAKES struck but no fish on then goldwing got hit but dropped the fish halfway in.... we left goldwing and doggie3131 fishing and called it a day.... it was nice meeting up with the lads and enjoyed their company over the few sessions hopefully we'll get a better account of them when the tides are more favourable. I quick call to doggie3131 in the morning for and update another smut each around the 4lb-5lb bracket and a tub gurnard to doggie3131.... took this evening off for some creamy pints and pool might sneak a quick afternoon session in tomorrow before hitting the road ;-)

the lads have the pics....

Well done lads, nice to see the trip paid off for yis  ,some fine smoothies taken there, fair play to Conor for putting you amongst the fish. Myself, fishface, Billy and Mitch were there last night for 6 hours and not a hound in sight, with the lads getting some gurnards and me lucky to get some small whiting in the end. At least we had a nice Bar-b-que  .There again,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,maybe we should have stayed all night   Well done again and maybe next time we can meet up hopefully
