Beara peninsula 26th - 29th august

#1 Post by evan699 »

Arrived down on the beara monday and went for a quick session close to the b&b. the target species at this mark were ray, conger and wrasse. I casted mack and sandeel baits out into the distance and live crabs in short for the wrasse. It took a bit of work but i found the wrasse in the end and hooked one that fought very well. No move on the baits out at distance so i packed up. I went for a session with paul harris in the morning. He chose a mark where we'd be targetting conger, ray, wrasse and pollack. The water was boiling with bait fish at times and the gulls were diving mad so it looked good. It was in fact very bad, i ended the session with one mack and paul blanked. Paul headed off and i set out for the second session of the day, blanked again as i was fishing in the wrong part of the mark, so off i went for the third session of the day. Nice easy access and i was set up in about 10 mins. Dropped all baits in close to try to find the congers and one rod out for the wrasse. The wrasse weren't playing ball but the congers started feeding hard as the tide started to fill. I Hooked two and landed two which wasn't bad as it's hard to get them up in this area. The next morning i headed off for a session on my own, again targetting ray. Casted out sandeel baits and waited. One rod went slack but the wind was cutting along the reach so i thought nothing of it. As soon as i got the line tight to the hook i knew it wasn't the wind but i wasn't sure what it was. Only when i got it in a bit shallower i started to suspect with the runs it was making. Ran out to my knees to beach a nice bass. Filled my wellies and got even more drenched when releasing it but it was worth it, no more fish after this. Next day i headed off in search of pollack and again, not a whole lot to report. Tried floating sandeels but they weren't doin the job so i chucked out a few soft plastics and picked up a few small fish. Lovely weather for the week and a few nice fish so i went home a happy man. Thanks to paul and ann harris for a great week in the dromagowlane house. Lovely spot, very friendly and helpful people and great fishing. I'll be back again soon.

Cheers mitch, My new pb definitely but i have no idea of the weight. If anyone would like to take a guess at the weight i'd be glad to hear a few estimates.

I've caught a few big ones before but that fella in the photo was as thick as my leg. Put up a fair battle alright. frightened the life out of a few swimmers.

The eels tail in the photo is curled up but pointing at the camera so it looks straight. It was a bit longer than it looks. It looks better in this photo
DSCN0410 (Medium).JPG
I lay down next to it for a photo but it tried biting me so i didn't stay lying there too long. It was almost the exact same length as me and i'm 5 ft 8ins.

Cheers paula. Had a great week and a few nice fish. The conger was definitely a highlight. I could take or leave the bass to be honest but it's good to get it off the wish list anyway.

Nice one richie. Was a good session but it won't keep me goin for too long. I'll be off down there again in the next few weeks. The fishing up in cork doesn't compare at all.

I was pulling some funny poses alright but i got there in the end. Probably looked funny to any walkers on the beach but i didn't mind.
