triggerfish - Co Antrim

#1 Post by sjwpjw »

Have any of you boys caught a triggerfish before? I was out with my son on saturday 31 Jul and caught and released the first one I have ever seen. It was about 1.5lb.

A triggerfish caught up here in the North! - nice one 8) And there was me travelling all the way down to Co.Kerry to try and catch one. Typical! I would love to see some pics of it if you took any, they are one mad looking fish.
I haven't caught one (yet, I'll keep trying) but would love too. I have tried for them a few times when I have been down fishing in Kerry but with no joy so far.
It's one of the species on my wishlist

This might be a bit off the subject but, if you catch one triggerfish, put it in a rock pool and carry on fishing. If you release the fish back into open water immediatly then it's very rare to catch another one in the same session. Helpful tip i picked up from a fishing guide.

Species 2015: Ballan wrasse, poor cod, pollack, ling, flounder, turbot, mackerel, whiting, lsd, dab, grey gurnard, pouting, cuckoo wrasse, cod

well, if there is one caught, there will be more about somewhere...... mmm, north coast session on the cards again this weekend!

you have made me think now, got a hell of a take while fishing wrasse at the weekend with some old peeler, ended up snagged and the snood ended up bit off at the hook, possibly a trigger, hadnt even entered my head to be honest
Not the BigPhil from Irish Angler mag, I'm the original, i swear!!!!

I was using a sandeel on a float trying my luck when i started getting bites, nothing on but then when the sandeel was under the rod tip a Triggerfish had followed it in,watched him pluck away at it for a few mins, tryin to hook up but the hook was too big for his mouth:( he was gone when i changed to a smaller hook, would of been my first triggerfish too, pity. Beautiful fish though:)

the mouth was very small for the size of the fish but what a grip!
