Bulloch Harbour 2/08/2010

#1 Post by shamoo0804 »

People:Myself, a friend and his 2 young nephews

Duration:4-7pm

Tide:falling

Weather: little wind, small swell,no rain

Bait:fresh launce and mackerel

Rigs: feathers

Results:launce, mackerel, pollock, ling, codling

Report:

With my mate having his nephews over from mayo for a few days it was decided to entertain them with a trip out on a rental boat at bulloch rather than the usual session on the beach or pier we give them when they are over this side of the country.

Wasnt gonna be fishing myself as I've a bad elbow at the moment, so I was skipper for the afternoon. Armed with my 2 boat rods, a beach caster and a spinning rod we set out around the back of dalkey island, set a few drifts over the reefs , the 2 young lads using the boat rods with feathers and my mate doing the same with the beachcaster but it seemed difficult to get into the pollock, just a few 1/2lb fish being caught, headed out a little further into deeper water ( near the other island with the lighthouse-dont know what its called sorry)but all we seemed to hit here was the launce and plenty of them, a few kept on the boat for bait for a go at the cod and ling on some reefs close to scotsmans bay.

The odd mackerel got, but not in any numbers, had another few drifts round the back of dalkey island, but again no pollock of any size, my mate even trying spinners without success. Seemed strange as I've had reasonable numbers of half decent pollock from around this area during trips out in recent years.

So a change of plan was required and we steamed back past bulloch to near the 40 foot cove, lots of swimmers, so we maintained a few drifts at a sensible distance from shore. 2nd drift one of the young lads hit a tidy little ling around 3lb on half a launce, he was kept for dinner.

A few more drifts of the area produced the odd mackerel, but again not in numbers, then a 2nd ling of about the same size as the 1st for the young lad, this time taking mackerel.

Went quite then for the last 45 mins or so, with one codling got on the baited feather taking mackerel, would have thrown him back usually at that size, but he was very deeply hooked and piissing blood, so he too was kept for the table.

Not a bad few hours fishing, but not quite upto the standard of previous trips for the pollock, nice the plan worked for the ling though, 1st time I've seen one caught.

Only downside to the pleasant afternoon, was some goon in a 30ft sports cruiser tearing around the bay, he seemed intend on flying past every small boat only a matter of metres away, and it was definately intentional, have to get myself an 80 footer when I win the lotto and give him a taste of his own medicine :P

He had 2 younish kids on the bow of the boat at times, hardly setting them a good example of etiquette on the water.

Some people have more cash than braincells

hard to beat getting out with the kids to wet a line, well done 8)
Shame about the eejit in the boat, same stuff here over the weekend, Gardaí in Killaloe seized a cruise boat on Lough Derg on Sunday night after it had been reported operating in a dangerous manner and endangering life and property.

Hi Mark we took a boat out of bullock on Monday i seen a boat with young ones in it so i persume it was yourself. My mate was in Bullock at 11:30 all the boats coming in were full of mackerel loads been caught at the back of Dalkey Island so we to had high hopes when we went out, but like yourself we had a lot of Codling and launce. We went over to the 40 foot cove we were drifting there when your friend came us in his sports cruiser he headed straight for us   i told Simon to move the boat it was to late as he just cruised by us he just missed us he didn't even apologize he just had a smirk on his face, if i was not mistaken there were children on board with him. Oh by the way well done on the ling 8) still a great day out.
Anto.

Nice Ling .Fair play .

I was out of Bulloch in my boat from 3 - 6.30 with my 2 little girls. .Got a few pollack and small codling towards 40 foot and a few pollack around Dalkey island .Its like a minefield with the pots .No mack around back of Dalkey and just small codling at Tearooms in Killiney .Found the mackarel under the convent on way back in and had 47 in around half an hour so a good finish .

Thankfully didnt see the fool you experienced. As John said report them if you get their details.

Thanks lads, the 2 young lads had a good day, and great to see a couple of ling.

Anto, you were probably in the boat out near the 40 foot and the yellow marker at the same time as us then, I wasnt fishing myself just keeping the other 3 fishing, hard work with 2 young 'uns, tangles, lost rigs etc

The guys in the harbour were saying the morning boats got bags full of macks where did they disappear to in the afternoon :?

Probably right about the lunatic in the boat, if it happens again I'll be sure to get the vessels name and report him - probably safer than launching a 7oz gripper in his direction

The pots are a minefield your right frank, wouldnt mind if it was just one bouy and one pot, you can fish around it, but when its just one bouy and a hidden string of pots its a bit more tricky :(

John, I had an idea that little island was the muglins but wasnt sure, would I be right in thinking its a handy spot for a few cod?

Myself and missus were out Monday from 2.00 to 7.00 when we went up past Bulloch a few boats were catching macks just outside the harbour. we went out about 2 miles to drift and a lot of macks about out there too. :D :D
On way back in stopped off in Scotsman's Bay about 6.30 that s*** for brains in the cruiser came tearing in around the 40 foot and then shot out again and seemed to be talking to some people in an open boat just at the point and the two people went up to the bow to chat.
Then lame brain takes off at a rate of knots swerving left to right and doing tight turns with the two people still on the bow, wonder how funny it would have been if they went over and into his prop.
Got out bino's but could not see a name but will be keeping a sharp eye out for this twit as I would like to have a nice chat with him about his lovely toy. :D :D

So it was you out in scotsman bay yappo I remember seeing a proper fishing boat out that way, that plonker in the boat had stopped very close to us as we were drifting just off the 40 foot, thats when his 2 kids came out onto the bow. From a distance it may have looked like they were chatting to us, but I can assure you if I didnt have 2 young kids on the boat I'd have given him a piece of my mind, certainly wouldnt have been a civil conversation

well done mark getting out [injured and all] and supervising the youngsters. the look on a kids face when they see fish on the hooks is worth all the effort as for the gobshite in the cruiser id say his daddy is away on holidays
